The American Savings Foundation board of directors recently approved 18 grants totaling $600,500 to support programs across New Britain, including:

✅ CLICC – Literacy Mentoring Program connecting kids with incarcerated parents through shared reading
✅ ReadyCT – Career Pathway Internships for New Britain High School students
✅ Big Brothers Big Sisters of Connecticut – One-to-one mentoring for youth
✅ Center for Children’s Advocacy – Medical/Legal Partnership Program improving health outcomes for low-income children
✅ Connecticut Choral Artists (CONCORA) – 2025-26 season of live choral concerts
✅ Connecticut Foodshare – Food delivery to partner agencies and mobile pantry sites
✅ Friendship Service Center – Hope Connection Center providing housing support, showers, laundry, and case management
✅ Human Resources Agency – Food and Resource Center, and energy assistance for families
✅ Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) – Financial Opportunity Center
✅ New Britain ROOTS – All Hands in the Garden youth agriculture program
✅ New Britain Symphony – 2025-26 season and Young People’s Concert
✅ Pro Bono Partnership – Legal assistance and educational workshops for nonprofits
✅ Prudence Crandall Center – Emergency shelter and 24/7 crisis hotline for survivors of domestic violence
✅ Reach Out and Read – Early literacy program with medical providers
✅ Salvation Army of New Britain – Pathway of Hope program supporting family economic stability
✅ Senior Transportation Services – Transportation for seniors to medical appointments

Great news for Waterbury! The American Savings Foundation recently awarded ten programs grants totaling $147,260 to support education, arts, mentorship, health, and food access.

Grant Recipients include:
✅ CLICC – Literacy Mentoring Program connecting kids with incarcerated parents through shared reading
✅ Girl Scouts of Connecticut – Waterbury Outreach Program for underserved girls
✅ HT CT – CHOICES in-school motivational program
✅ Connecticut Foodshare – Food delivery to 36 partner agencies and four mobile pantry locations
✅ Mattatuck Museum – Year-round arts education and outreach programs
✅ Palace Theater – Theater Arts Program for middle and high school students
✅ Pro Bono Partnership – Legal assistance and educational workshops for nonprofits
✅ StayWell Healthcare – Waterbury Community Care Team providing case management for mental and physical health
✅ Waterbury Symphony Orchestra – BRAVO! music education program for grades 1–7
✅ YMCA of Greater Waterbury – Linking Academics to Life, college, career, and life readiness programs

Lights on Afterschool is a nationwide celebration of afterschool programs and the vital role afterschool programs play in the lives of students, families, and communities. 💡

Earlier this month, the Connecticut After School Network hosted the 2025 Lights on Afterschool Celebration at YMCA Camp Ingersoll. This annual event celebrates Connecticut professionals in afterschool and out-of-school time programming. Attendees had a wonderful time highlighting local programs, collaborating with peers, and having a great time!

Our very own Maria Sanchez, Director of Grantmaking & Community Investment at the American Savings Foundation, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Lights on Afterschool Celebration, hosted by the Connecticut After School Network at Camp Ingersoll in Portland, Connecticut.

For more than 25 years with American Savings Foundation, Maria has devoted her career to building and supporting afterschool programs across Connecticut—working with schools, municipalities, and program professionals to strengthen initiatives, direct funding, and help programs thrive.

Maria has announced that she will be retiring at the end of 2025. She will leave behind a remarkable legacy of leadership, advocacy, and mentorship across the field of afterschool.

Each year at our annual scholarship reception, we present a number of Named Memorial Awards in honor of our founding board members. This year, the Mark Karp Award was presented to Amalia Workoski. This award is presented to a New Britain High School graduate who has demonstrated leadership in New Britain youth programs.

Amalia will be entering her freshman year at UConn. She been involved in the New Britain community in and out of school. She participated in the New Britain Parks and Rec programs in middle school and now works as a lifeguard and water safety instructor. In addition, she served as the Student Liaison on the Board of Education, and volunteers for Walnut Hill Park and her local church, while also serving on several student clubs.

The American Savings Foundation is now accepting Community Grant applications from nonprofit organizations in the 64 Connecticut towns we serve. The Community Grants program accepts applications for up to $5,000 to support direct program services in Education, Human Services, and Arts and Culture. In 2024, 53 local community programs received $174,000 through our Community Grants!

Each year at our annual scholarship reception, we present a number of Named Memorial Awards in honor of our founding board members. This year, the Carl Cicchetti Award was presented to Andrea Garcia. This award is presented to a student who has shown leadership in Waterbury.

Andrea is planning to attend the University of New Haven to major in Forensic Science. She has been a student leader at Wilby High School, volunteering with the Wilby Cat’s Den, Maloney Elementary School, the Lion’s Club, and the Wilby Gear Up program. Andrea has also been active in National Honor Society, Student Council, Upward Bound, and competed on the cheer, soccer, and swim teams.
