Our History:
The National Iwo Jima Memorial was conceived and built by the Iwo Jima Survivors Association, led by Dr. George Gentile. On Feb 23, 1995 the monument was dedicated in memory of the 6,821 Americans who lost their lives on Iwo Jima, 50 years after the iconic flag raising depicted by the monument. The names of the 100 Connecticut men who died are inscribed on the monument, and 100 flags

are flown at the Park to commemorate their sacrifice. Our Mission:
The National Iwo Jima Memorial remembers the men and women who served on Iwo Jima and throughout World War II, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country. It serves to educate the public about the battle of Iwo Jima and the heroism of the Americans who served there. The monument is maintained by the Iwo Jima Memorial Historical Foundation Inc, through the generous donations of our supporters. This National Iwo Jima Memorial Monument and Park is maintained by the Iwo Jima Memorial Historical Foundation Inc, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

IMPORTANT NOTICE — TEMPORARY CLOSURE
The National Iwo Jima Memorial in Newington/New Britain is closed until further notice due to significant storm damage sustained Friday night.
A fallen tree brought down power lines, damaged the parking lot guardrail, and caused the Eternal Flame to go out. Additional damage occurred along Ella Grasso Boulevard, where a large branch struck the fence and several tribute flags. Connecticut Natural Gas has shut off the gas supply, and Eversource will manage electrical repairs.
We know how meaningful this memorial is to so many who visit for reflection and peace. Our all-volunteer staff is working hard to assess and address the damage.
