Our History:
The National Iwo Jima Memorial was conceived and built by the Iwo Jima Survivors Association, led by Dr. George Gentile. On Feb 23, 1995 the monument was dedicated in memory of the 6,821 Americans who lost their lives on Iwo Jima, 50 years after the iconic flag raising depicted by the monument. The names of the 100 Connecticut men who died are inscribed on the monument, and 100 flags are flown at the Park to commemorate their sacrifice. Our Mission:
The National Iwo Jima Memorial remembers the men and women who served on Iwo Jima and throughout World War II, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country. It serves to educate the public about the battle of Iwo Jima and the heroism of the Americans who served there. The monument is maintained by the Iwo Jima Memorial Historical Foundation Inc, through the generous donations of our supporters. This National Iwo Jima Memorial Monument and Park is maintained by the Iwo Jima Memorial Historical Foundation Inc, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Always good to be here. Today we honor an unsung hero of the Battle of Iwo Jima. The bonus is family members will be attending with us too. May the memory of Sergeant William H. Genaust's service live forever. 🇺🇸

Once in a while, I’ll find a good subject to write about. Today’s subject is the OTHER combat cameraman who captured the famous flag raising on the island of Iwo Jima. Everyone knows, o…

Stop by the memorial on Friday morning if you're able. You'll hear the story of a true hero of the battle. 👍 🇺🇸
