Veterans of the Battle of San Jacinto in Belton, 1883. They were standing there fewer than 50 years after the battle, looking around at solid buildings in a peaceful setting with old friends and brothers, the future of Texas secure, they must have felt immensely proud of the results of their toil and suffering in 1836, don't you think?

Day 5 of the Alamo Siege

February 27, 1836

Both sides continued to fight the bitter cold. It never rises out of the 30’s and the wind bites deep.

The Mexicans pillage Bexar of food and perishables. After ransacking the town, they plunder nearby ranchos, taking livestock and other foodstuffs.

The Mexicans cut off the eastern acequia from the Alamo garrison. Now the defenders have to rely on the well inside the compound again. It doesn’t produce near enough for the almost two hundred people inside.

The Matamoros battalion begins to dig trenches south of the Alamo. Santa Anna doesn’t think they are close enough and orders new ones to be dug closer.

Meanwhile the Texians maintain constant fire on the Mexican work crews with little result.

The Texians work on their own entrenchment inside the parapet of the cattle pen. But this ditch sadly proves harmful to the Alamo's defense by undermining the walls.

190 years ago today, the Alamo siege begins. The siege of the Alamo began on February 23, 1836, when Mexican forces led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna arrived in San Antonio de Béxar and surrounded the mission. This 13-day siege preceded the final assault on March 6, 1836, during the Texas Revolution.
