UPDATE (Tuesday, Jan. 21, 3:30pm): All City operations will return to their regular schedules on Wednesday, Jan. 22, except for garbage and recycling collection.

Garbage and recycling collection will shift to the next day, similar to a holiday week. For example, Tuesday collection moves to Wednesday, Wednesday collection moves to Thursday, etc.

Reminder the the Westside Campus will be a warming center until 5pm this evening!

All non-essential city facilities will open at 1pm today. Learn more about the City’s delayed openings below.

ORIGINAL POST: Ice and snow accumulation during the overnight hours has prompted an extension of the delayed opening for City of New Braunfels facilities and the postponement of garbage and recycling collection.

🏛️CITY FACILITIES & SERVICES
▪️Garbage and Recycling collection is postponed for today (Tuesday, Jan. 21), and collection services for the remainder of the week will move to the next day, similar to a holiday week schedule (ie: Tuesday collection will move to Wednesday, Wednesday collection will move to Thursday, and Thursday collection will move to Friday).
▪️All non-essential City services will delay opening until 1pm today (Tuesday, Jan. 21). This includes City Hall and other administrative offices, Municipal Court, the New Braunfels Public Library, the Westside Community Center, Das Rec , the Civic & Convention Center, and the City Municipal Building (424 S. Castell Ave.)
▪️Police and Fire/EMS will continue operations as usual.
▪️The Landa Park Golf Course will be closed through Wednesday, Jan. 22, and will re-open on Thursday, Jan. 23, at noon.
▪️Restrooms, water fountains, and other similar facilities in all City parks are temporarily closed.

🚧ROAD & BRIDGE PREP
Drivers are advised to avoid travel, if possible, until road conditions return to safe conditions. City street crews will continue to lay down gravel and de-icing agents on local roads and bridges. Additionally, TxDOT is taking similar precautions on I-35 and other major highways. Residents can find updated local road closure information on the City of New Braunfels website at newbraunfels.gov

The Community Center will be open tomorrow, January 21st, from 9am to 5pm as a warming center staffed by the City of New Braunfels Fire Department and New Braunfels Community Emergency Response Team.

The US National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio Texas is predicting winter weather conditions across South Central Texas and a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Comal County and Guadalupe County to include the City of New Braunfels, until 6pm on Tuesday, Jan. 21st. Forecasters are predicting rain, snow, freezing rain, and sleet with freezing temperatures overnight and the possibility of ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch along with new snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch. City of New Braunfels staff are closely monitoring weather conditions and a number of decisions have been made to ensure the safety of City staff and residents.

A warming center is being offered at the Westside Community Center (2932 South I-35 Frontage Road, Phone: 830-221-4630) and will be open on Monday, Jan. 20th, from 9am to 5pm. Staffed by the New Braunfels Fire Department and NB CERT members.

Our facility offers temporary relief from the cold, but is not a shelter. Anyone in need of overnight accommodations should contact the New Braunfels Salvation Army at 830-608-9129.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service are predicting the possibility of winter weather conditions this weekend and early next week across South Central Texas, including freezing overnight temperatures and the possibility of a mix of winter precipitation including rain, sleet, ice, and snow flurries. As a precaution, the City of New Braunfels is taking several proactive steps and will closely monitor weather conditions as additional decisions are made.

CITY FACILITIES & SERVICES🏛️
New Braunfels City staff will monitor updates from the National Weather Service to determine whether City facilities or services will be affected. Any postponements or closures will be posted on the City’s website at www.newbraunfels.gov and on the City’s social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram, and NextDoor.

▪️ Police, Fire & EMS, Public Works, and Solid Waste pick-up will continue operations as normal.

Please note: There are currently no changes to the schedule for residential or commercial garbage and recycling pickup. Should changes become necessary, updates will be posted on the City of New Braunfels website and on the City’s social media platforms.

▪️ Monday, January 20th, is already a City holiday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with closures scheduled for City Hall, Municipal Court, the Public Library, Parks & Recreation administrative offices, and the Westside Community Center.

▪️ Das Rec will continue normal hours of operation on Monday.

▪️ The Landa Park Golf Course will be closed beginning Monday, Jan. 20th through Wednesday, Jan. 22nd and will re-open on Thursday, Jan. 23rd at 12:00pm.

▪️ Restrooms, water fountains, and other similar facilities in all City parks have been winterized and are closed until the end of overnight freezing temperatures.

ROAD AND BRIDGE PREPARATION 🚧
Preparations by City Public Works crews have been made to lay down gravel and de-icing agents on local roads and bridges should that become necessary. TxDOT is making similar preparations for I-35 and other major highways. Should road closures become necessary, residents can find updated local road closure information on the City of New Braunfels website. If icy conditions form, drivers are advised to avoid travel, if possible.

CITY MEETINGS AND EVENTS 📅
The Martin Luther King Day March downtown, hosted by the New Braunfels MLK Association, is planned for Monday morning at 9am starting at Prince Solms Park. Attendees are advised to dress warmly. For more information on that event, please visit the New Braunfels MLK Association page.

There are currently no other changes to City-related meetings or events. Any changes will be posted on the City website and on the City’s social media platforms.

Applications for City University are OPEN! 🤩

New Braunfels City University is a free, interactive program that gives participants a behind-the-scenes look at how city services are provided. Through presentations, demonstrations, and tours, you’ll explore City Administration, Police and Fire, Public Works, Parks, and the Library.

Youth City University is a special program for high school students that runs alongside City University. In addition to attending class sessions, youth participants will meet as a cohort to create a presentation for City Council, sharing their experiences, observations, and recommendations for youth programs and services in the community.

🎓REQUIREMENTS:
▪️City University: Must be resident of the City of New Braunfels (or its extraterritorial jurisdiction – ETJ) and be at least 17 years old.
▪️Youth City University: Must be City of New Braunfels resident and be enrolled in 9th – 12th grade at a public, private, or home school.
