There is a heat wave on our doorstep. The library is open during the peak heat Wednesday and Thursday if you want to go down and read a book and cool off. A simple step to stay cool in your own home, if you don't have A/C is to keep ALL your shades and windows CLOSED and have a fan move the air around inside. This simple trick should keep toy house 10 degrees cooler. Keep the stove and oven off during these peak times as well. The extremely young and the elderly will feel this this most so check up on them, and don't forget your pets. They sweet thru their mouth so you will see them panting heavily and keep them hydrated as well.

To ALL New Boston is in the middle of a town wide emergency. Because of the over night ice event, about 80% of the town is without power and could take up to several days before it is back on in some places. ALSO if you run a generator do NOT put in a garage to close to the house. FD is getting carbon monoxide alarms because of generators. Keep it as far away from the house and face the exhaust down wind and away from the house. A little common sense goes a long way and will save you a trip to the hospital. Carbon monoxide will kill !!!

The up coming storm will be a challenge. Starting off with heavy wet snow changing over to heavy rain with a couple inches. On top of all that there is the potential for wind gust to 45 MPH. With all that there is the possibility of trees and wires down. With the wet conditions, stay FAR away for any downed wires. Treat ALL wires as if they are still alive! ! ! The power line primary voltage is 12,700 volts can charge the ground out to 2 telephone poles distance. Do NOT drive over wires! Rain is a conductor so don't think you are safe in a car, your NOT. ALSO to get the latest news of any situations in town, sign up for CODERED. You can find the link at the bottom of the town home web page. Stay safe.

For those of you that missed the public hearing last night, which had about 90 people, there was a unanimous standing ovation when the select board accepted the $9.285 million grant from the DOD, for the new fire station. The only other hurtle is to raise soft cost money, either from private donations or the Go Fund Me page., which is NOT covered by the grant. It is NOT clear exactly how much is needed, it could be anywhere from $250K to $500K but in any case if it is raised there will not be a need for a warrant article next March. My wife and I talked about a donation and agreed to donate $500.00 toward the fire station building soft cost fund. I would like to also challenge any resident or nonresident or business to match this donation. Remember, this is YOUR station, take pride in it.
Thankyou
Bruce

Hello, people, if there is an emergency or a public safety issue, PLEASE call 911 FIRST! Had a situation today where a tree came down and as a result, snapped a pole in half. A resident texted Eversource saying they had no power and another resident noticed the snapped pole snapped and texted PD, which knew nothing about the situation. Had 911 been called first PD and Fire would have responded immediately and they would have notified Eversource. Fire and PD's assessment of the situation to Eversource gives them a better idea of what is needed and prioritizes event. Remember, call 911 FIRST. Thank you

CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Participates in NBCS Evacuation Drill

On Thursday, December 1st, at 9 a.m., a formal evacuation drill of NBCS was successfully conducted as scheduled, utilizing a command center construct, with CERT involvement. This drill involved efficiently moving the NBCS population to several local safe room areas. Coordination between the police department, the highway department, CERT, and NBCS was required for the desired outcome. The drill proceeded in a calm and orderly fashion, with CERT coordinating and actively performing temporary road closures, as needed, to ensure the safety of all participants. Also in attendance were the SAU school superintendent and a representative from the state Emergency Management office.

With the upcoming snowstorm, chances are we will lose power in some areas, so be sure you have flashlights and batteries. ALSO, if you have to use a generator, it should be completely OUTSIDE! Not in a garage with the door open. Power outages may last for a while as power crews will not respond in high winds or blizzard conditions. I also just learned that the Transfer Station will be CLOSED tomorrow so residents don't have to venture out just to get rid of their trash. Stay off the roads so road crews can move the snow.

Happy New Year, and along with a new year comes NEW batteries for your smoke and CO detectors, and any other emergency devices relying on batteries. In 2021 CERT contributed 122-man hours of service to the town of New Boston. Most of that time was during the COVID drive thru, assisting people thru the process. As 2022 is only hours away, that doesn't mean that the COVID will be any less contagious! You still should mask up and keep your distance because even the people that have gotten the shots and booster, with a compromised immune system, they can still catch the virus. You may be a carrier withOUT knowing or feeling the symptoms, so the next time you are in a close quarters event, you could be bringing it home to loved ones, so have a SAFE and Happy New Year.

COVID 2'nd shot Drive thru
CERT was out again in full force, helping with the 2'nd shot drive thru. Thanks to the many volunteers from the FD., to the Rec. volunteers, to the nurses and EMTs and the many administrative people involved, this was a huge success and greatly appreciated by the many people I spoke to, getting their final shot. The weather wasn't great, but it didn't stop all the volunteers from helping provide a valuable service the senior residents and home bound people of New Boston. A few pictures on CERT (in the yellow jackets) at the check-in station, vaccination station, and the parking lot holding area.
