Happy National Fire Dog Day!
Dalmatians are the most iconic firehouse dog, but how did they come to get there? What is the history of this iconic dog breed?
We don't actually know for certain where Dalmatians originated from. Most sources will tell you Dalmatia, but this isn't true. The records of black or brown spotted dogs have actually been found as far back as 3700 BCE, in Ancient Egypt. It is theorized by canine historians, however, that the breed was actually established around 400 BCE between a Cretan Hound and a Bahakaa Dog. The resulting offspring would love to run alongside horses for miles following their masters on great hunts. Modern Dalmatians trace back to the 16th century when the English brought them back to their country.
So what are Dalmatians? Well, according to the American Kennel Club, they're the most closely related to retrievers, but no modern established dog breed actually lines up genetically with the Dalmatian. Dalmatians are jack-of-all-trades master of none type dogs. They've been movie stars, firehouse dogs, ratters, guard dogs, carriage dogs and they've carried messages during both world wars.
No one actually knows where the name "Dalmatian" came from, but the Dalmatia myth is the most popularly spread one despite being incorrect. The most wide accepted theories for the name come from three different stories: the French word for dog and the Latin word for fallow deer combined is "Damachein," and eventually morphed until it became "Dalmatian", the Serbian poet Jurji Dalmatin who mentioned the dog breed in correspondence, or it came from the word "dalmaticus" which were the fur cloaks 14th century monks wore when posed alongside a white dog with black spots for a painting.
Dalmatians are most iconic as firehouse dogs. This stemmed from the days of horse drawn fire apparatus. Dalmatians would diligently follow or lead the crews to the fires. These spotty dogs would then guard the horses and keep them calm on the scene. They would also prevent anyone from messing with the equipment. Even after fire apparatus became motorized, the firefighters found themselves unable to leave their loyal companions behind, and you can still find them occasionally lounging around in apparatus bays across the country.
