Thank you to everyone who was able to commemorate this special day celebrating 30 years of MERCI Clinic!

Thirty years ago, in 1996, a group of community leaders came together with a vision for healthcare that would serve neighbors who faced barriers to accessing care.

Dr. Ralph Redding, Beverlee Redding, Rev. Caroline West, then assistant rector at Christ Church, Sonya Moore of Religious Community Services, representatives of Matthew 25, Monica Parker of East Carolina University, and community member Harriet Milde helped shape the original mission and vision for MERCI Clinic.

On August 20, 1996, MERCI opened its doors with two examination tables and a one-night-a-week schedule.

I would love to stand here today and say that, after 30 years, MERCI Clinic is no longer needed. Unfortunately, that is not our reality.

Today, MERCI Clinic serves more than 300 unduplicated patients, and for many complex reasons, our community needs us now more than ever. New estimates show that we will likely be serving over 400 unduplicated patients by the end of the year.

MERCI Clinic is ready to face the challenges ahead.

With an updated mission, support from our amazing community and a strong, resilient team of competent professional staff and volunteers, we are positioned to continue providing compassionate, community-based, comprehensive, quality healthcare and limited dental care to low-income, uninsured and underinsured adults, while also addressing the social determinants of health that impact their well-being.

For 30 years, MERCI has been a source of health, hope, and healing in ENC. And we are committed to being that resource for the next 30 years and beyond.

To every donor, volunteer, staff member, healthcare provider, community partner, and supporter who has helped make this day possible: thank you. MERCI exists because of you.

What started 30 years ago as a vision for compassionate care has grown into a community of patients, volunteers, providers, staff, donors, and partners who believe that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare.

Today, MERCI Clinic provides primary and specialty care, dental care, pharmacy services, care coordination, referrals, transportation, and connections to resources that address the needs of the whole person. Behind every number is a person, a family, and a story—and behind every patient is a community that cares. The kindness demonstrated by our community is awe inspiring.

Over three decades, thousands of people have walked through our doors. Hundreds of volunteers have given their time and expertise. Countless community partners and donors have stepped forward to help us keep going. We are grateful.

30 years later, the heart of MERCI remains the same: neighbors helping neighbors.
