Happy 254th Birthday to Freemasonry in New Bern NC

Happy 254th Birthday St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 3!

On this day, January 10, we celebrate our rich history. Chartered in 1772 by Joseph Montfort, the Provincial Grand Master of America, under the authority of the Duke of Beaufort, Grand Master of the Most Ancient and Honourable Society of Free and Accepted Masons.

Today, we reflect on 254 years of brotherhood and the commitment to our community. Here’s to many more years of fellowship and service!

Feel free to share your favorite memories or thoughts in the comments!

As we enter a new year, let's not forget our heritage and long Masonic history in New Bern.

St. John's Masonic Lodge and Theater is New Bern's most stylish Federal-period public building and has significant historical associations with many of the city's most prominent citizens.

It is documented that meetings began as early as 1755, a full 17 years before the lodge’s official charter. Meetings were often held in local homes, as well as a pub called the King Arms.

Upon the state of North Carolina relocating the capital to Raleigh, the Masons were able to use a space in the Tryon Palace to hold their meetings.

Sadly, the palace succumbed to a fire in February 1798. This left the St. John’s lodge looking for a new home.

On November 7, 1798 members voted to purchase this building located on the corner of Hancock and Johnson St.

It is the oldest Masonic structure in continuous use in North Carolina.
