Last night I had the privilege of speaking at Williamson County Teen Court, and connecting with these young people was POWERFUL. ❤️🩹
Teen Court is made up of student volunteers who hear and judge actual juvenile misdemeanor cases. The defendants have pleaded guilty to a Class C misdemeanor—things like traffic violations, possession of alcohol, or assault—and have been given the opportunity by a judge (Judge Angela Williams) to participate in Teen Court in exchange for having their misdemeanor dismissed.
This allows the kids to learn what it takes to practice law, leadership skills, courtroom etiquette and play one of the many roles like a defense attorney, prosecutor, bailiff or juror.
I was able to share my story of surviving a head-on crash caused by an impaired driver, but also the judicial side of my case. We talked about the law, consequences, accountability, and how impaired-driving laws can vary from state to state. ❌🍺🚙
But what stayed with me was afterward a young man came up and shared that his own life had been impacted by drunk driving. He asked where he could go for help and resources. I had the opportunity to connect with him, support him and give him a hug. 🥹❤️🩹
THAT is my why.
Yes, our mission is about education and prevention. It’s about changing behaviors and preventing impaired driving. But it’s also about connecting with people who have been impacted, reminding them there are resources and support available, and using what I’ve lived through to hopefully help someone else. ❤️🩹
