New Bern Breakfast Rotary The New Bern Breakfast Rotary Club meets every Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m. at the Ghent Sandwich Shop, 1914 Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd, New Bern, NC 28560

Our service projects are ever-evolving and include ringing bells for the Salvation Army in December, making lunch at the RCS community kitchen the first Friday morning in every month, mentoring local Interact clubs and providing 300 pairs of shoes and helping the children pick them out via our Kicks For Kids program every year. The club also supports college scholarships, Trent River YMCA, Promise Place, Partners in Education to name a few. The club's signature annual fundraiser is the B/S/H Oktoberfest, held in New Bern every September.

THURSDAY MORNING MEERTING
We will be meeting on Thursday, 10/22, at the Ghent Event Center at 7:30 AM. Our speakers will be Paul Platek who will be discussing Polio. New Bern Parks and Recreation Director, Kari Warren, will be providing information on the updates coming to Martin Marietta Park as a result of the last year’s bond referendum. Stephen Clayton, Recreation Program Coordinator, will accompany her.
We will also have a meeting 10/22 at 5:30PM at the Ghent Event Center and will test our knowledge of polio.

Important Announcements:
1. We had a Pig Pickin’ 10/18. This was great fun with lots of opportunity for fellowship… and some good eatin’. I hope we can add this to the list the fun club does in the future – with or without the pig. Thanks to all our members and their family and friends who joined us in the fun.
2. Our Meals on Wheels dates for this year are 11/10, 12/10 and 12/31. Gretchen will be handing out signup sheets.

1. We’ll be helping with Ghostwalk on 10/23 at 202 Johnson St. Come check it out! Celeste and Dick are in skits so we will be well represented.
2. Polio walk at Union Point Park on 10/25 at 3PM. Lace up your sneakers and let’s get our steps in. Paul Platek and Gretchen will coordinate this event.

Thursday morning marked the official visit of our 2026-27 District Governor Sophie Szymeczek. Assistant District Governor Meloni Wray introduced DG Sophie whose career in nursing and training in animal science helped prepare her for the challenge of serving as the last official District Governor of 7720. She explained the reasons behind our district merger with 7730 as of July 1, 2027, becoming District 7725, with an estimated 82+ clubs, under the leadership of DG John Polk from the Outer Banks Club. The merger will mean more resources, more members, and more impact in communities throughout eastern North Carolina.

DG Sophie shared the message and theme of this year’s Rotary International President: to “Create Lasting Impact” by understanding what and where we can make a difference; increase membership by stressing the importance of supporting our Interact and Rotaract clubs to keep young people engaged and committed to the Rotary mission; support our Rotary Foundation; and finish the job of wiping out Polio. As of now, there are 35 cases in Afghanistan and 5 cases in Pakistan. She noted that World Polio Day, October 24, is Jonas Salk’s birthday.

DG Sophie explained her term’s project for this year is to support a fellow nurse, and Rotary member, Karen Rae Throckmorton in Hertford, who founded Omni International in Zambia (www.omnimissions.com) to provide vulnerable children living on the street with medical care, education, and community support. She is asking every club in District 7720 to donate to Omni International. See pictures attached.

Never surprising when Rodger Allison attends a meeting in his latest garb: this time as a pirate character in the "Haunted Histories: Tales of the High Seas Gala" to benefit RCS. This fundraiser is on Saturday, October 17 at 5:00pm at the Riverfront Convention Center. See picture of Rodger attached.

* October 18, Sunday at 4:00pm. Pig Pickin. Bring a chair, your own drinks and sides you signed up for.
* Funds raised from our Successful Oktoberfest fundraiser will provide close to 400 pairs of shoes for elementary and middle school children in Craven County.
* Dick Peeples and Celeste McAllister will be acting in Ghost Walk at 202 Johnson Street, Six of our members will volunteer at this event.
* There will be a new member orientation on Monday, November 16 at Paul and Carmen Platek's house.

Dave Whitley announced exciting research by Swiss researchers who found that filtering toxic proteins from the blood that are responsible for dementia, improved cognitive ability. So far research has only been done on mice.

Thursday Morning Meeting, October 15

We will be meeting on Thursday, 10/15, at the Ghent Event Center at 7:30 AM. Our speaker will be DG Sophie Szymeczek. It will be a great time to get to know her a little better and hear about what’s happening around the district. Area 8 Assistant Governor Meloni Wray will be joining her.

* Ramona will be hosting a Dinner to Donate on 10/16 at her home 1917 Spencer Ave from 6PM. The beneficiary will be RCS. See Flyer attached for more details.
* We will be having a Pig Pickin’ 10/18 at 4PM Cottle Park, 608 River Rd, Trent Woods, NC. We are at capacity, so please don’t invite anyone else who’s not already on the list. This is going to be a fun event with lots of opportunity for fun, fellowship… and some good eatin’. We will also have a collection of personal care items for men, women and children to donate to Coastal Center for Hope & Healing at the Pig Pickin’. If you can’t attend, please bring donations to our meeting on Thursday, 10/15.

LET'S MAKE A BLANKET!

Saturday, October 24, is "The Great Blanket Making Event" for volunteers to make 20 blankets to donate to Journey of Hope, Carolina East Foundation's nonprofit cancer support program. On Saturday, October 3rd, Ann and Dave Super along with District Governor Sophie Szymeczek joined the Washington Noon Club for the dedication of their Rotary Peace Pole followed by a peaceful walk around Washington, NC. The pole has four sides with a peace message in English, Dutch, Algonquin and Spanish commemorating the heritage of the area. Club President Ann thought such a pole would be a nice addition to New Bern. See picture of Sophie, Ann and Dave.

Our guest speaker at Thursday morning's meeting was Sheri Smith, Community Outreach Coordinator and Office Manager for Journey of Hope, Carolina East Foundation's nonprofit cancer support program. Sheri, herself a cancer survivor, will be with Journey of Hope for 40 years in November. This is a volunteer organization dedicated to providing support and resources to cancer patients and their caregivers. Services provided include Chemo/Radiation Care Bags, transportation assistance gas cards, financial assistance for medications, art therapy and yoga.

Journey of Hope hosts several community events throughout the year to raise awareness of all types of cancers and to give cancer patients a platform to share their journeys with the community. Club member Jenn Jump and guest, Nicole. both cancer survivors, shared their experiences with Journey of Hope with some heartwarming stories. Journey of Hope will be sponsoring a Colors for Cancer Run fundraiser, the first Saturday in November. It is also hosting, in cooperation with Taberna golf course, a golfing "Scramble" on Saturday, October 10. See pictures of Sheri and Flyer.

WORLD POLIO DAY: OCTOBER 24, 2026.

Contaminated water is one of the main ways of spreading the Polio viruses. Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Polio Plus was launched in 1985 and has resulted in a 99.9% reduction in the number of Polio Cases world-wide.

Join us in raising awareness about polio and honor those working towards eradication. World Polio Day is celebrated in recognition of the significant progress made in reducing polio cases world-wide.

We will be meeting on Thursday, 10/8, at the Ghent Event Center at 7:30 AM. Speaker will be Sheri Smith, community outreach coordinator and office manager for Journey of Hope, Carolina East Foundation’s nonprofit cancer support program. The evening meeting will be at 5:30 PM at the Ghent Event Center. Speaker will be Mike Markham who will speak on "Without women there would be no phone service."

Our guest speaker at last Thursday's breakfast meeting was Susan Williams, Director CNCED Board of Elections. Susan reviewed the different processes and operations relating to voting on election day. For example, Susan explained the rules for expired IDs, verification of who you are (NC does not allow signature verification), absentee ballots, provisional voting (not a traditional voter-make sure no issues to prevent you from voting), and voting by mail. In addition, a vote by a felon does not count. Also, if you die before election day, after voting early, the vote does not count under NC election law. She also advised of a new voting site in Havelock at 1208 East Main Street. The voting site in New Bern is at 406 Craven Street. See pictures of Susan attached.

Dave Super, Membership Chair, acknowledged Barbara Belon for completing her new member checklist after induction to membership. Barbara is Past District Governor from Pennsylvania, so she already knows more about Rotary than the average member.. See picture of Barbara and Dave.

The 46th New Bern Area Crop Hunger Walk at Union Point Park was another success. Folks came together on Sunday at Union Point Park to walk toward ending hunger, around the world and here at home. Among them were 19 members of the New Bern Breakfast Rotary team, some walking one mile while others walked the three-mile route. The weather couldn't have been better, noted Mayor Jeff Odham who attended his fifth Crop Walk. See picture of team.

During opening ceremonies Mayor Odham presented our own Patti Peeples with a Certificate of Recognition for her dedication to fighting hunger over the years. Through countless hours of volunteer service, serving on the RCS Board of Directors, as Board President, as well as chairing the Empty Bowls Committee to help address hunger in our community, Patii embodies the spirit of the Crop Hunger Walk. Congratulations Patti, a well-earned honor. See picture of Patti accepting honor from Mayor Odham.
