New Bern Breakfast Rotary The New Bern Breakfast Rotary Club meets every Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m. at the Ghent Sandwich Shop, 1914 Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd, New Bern, NC 28560

Our service projects are ever-evolving and include ringing bells for the Salvation Army in December, making lunch at the RCS community kitchen the first Friday morning in every month, mentoring local Interact clubs and providing 300 pairs of shoes and helping the children pick them out via our Kicks For Kids program every year. The club also supports college scholarships, Trent River YMCA, Promis

e Place, Partners in Education to name a few. The club's signature annual fundraiser is the B/S/H Oktoberfest, held in New Bern every September.

In addition to speaking at our morning meeting last Thursday, Pacifique' also spoke at our evening meeting (2nd and 4th Thursday evenings each month from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at Ghent Event Center). She shared her refugee journey for a personal and provocative story of resilience and commitment to give back to those still in the refugee camps in Rwanda.

SAVE THE DATE - JUNE 20, 2026 - JUNETEENTH PARADE

COME JOIN THE FUN: Members of our club will be marching in the Juneteenth Parade on Saturday, June 20th. We support this event and will have our own trailer with members handing out hard candies. Please come and join in the fun. Parade begins at 11:00am with a festival on Broad Street around noon. There will be fireworks in Henderson Park at 8:30pm. We look forward to seeing all of you!

This week we will have our last morning meeting of the 2025-2026 Rotary Year. We will be meeting on Thursday, June 18, at the Ghent Event Center at 7:30 am. In lieu of a speaker this week, we will be doing a micro-project, filling bags of candy to hand out to the children at the Juneteenth parade on Saturday, June 20.

There is no evening meeting for the remainder of this month. The next evening meeting will take place on Thursday, July 9 at the Ghent Event Center, with a 5:30 pm start.

Some important announcements:

1. If you want to march in the Juneteenth Parade with your Rotary Club, we will meet on Saturday, June 20, at 9:30 am at Henderson Park on Chapman Street, which is just past the Stanley White Recreation Center. Wear a Rotary shirt if you have one. We will get there at 9:30 to reserve our spot in line and decorate our "float". The parade kicks off at 11:00 am.

3. There will not be a morning meeting on Thursday, July 2. We will resume our regular morning meetings on Thursday, July 9.

Upcoming meetings:

New Member Orientation Meeting: Wednesday, June 17, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at the Craven Literacy Council, 2507-A Neuse Blvd. If you are new to Rotary and/or our club, and have not attended one of these orientation meetings, please plan to attend! You will greatly benefit from the information that will be presented.

At today's Breakfast Meeting we heard from Pacifique Uwimbabazi from Community Raise Echoes, who told of her highs and lows as the daughter of Rwanda refugees living in Rwanda refugee camps. Born in Rwanda five years after her parents fled to Rwanda in 1996 due to the first Congo War. She earned good grades through primary school to upper high school with hopes of becoming a pharmacist. Despite many hardships she completed her studies at the top of her class earning a bachelor's degree and started an envelope business along the way to help support her parents.

Because of her refugee status, Pacifique could not attend pharmaceutical school; so she took a job as a school counsellor before starting up her own business, Community Raise Echoes. Believing your background does not define your future, Pacifique's organization provides the mentorship and education needed to ensure refugee status never limits their potential or defines their future. ALZHEIMER'S UPDATE: David Whitley reported that 2/3 of Alzheimer's victims are women who are also twice as likely to have depression To reduce the harmful effects of depression, David reported that you should treat it like blood pressure, move the body for 20 minutes, and sleep seven to eight hours a day.

This week we will be meeting as normal at the Ghent Event Center, 1914 Dr. MLK Blvd, beginning at 7:30 am. Our speaker this week is Pacifique Uwimbabazi, who will talk about her experiences in refugee camps in Rwanda.

There WILL be an evening meeting this week on Thursday, June 11, starting at 5:30pm at the Ghent Event Center.

A great, but hot day for our Annual Shredding Event yesterday! Thanks to all our great members, one son (Marva Long), and Caden from Allways Shred, we collected 5500 pounds (2.75 tons!) of papers and documents to be shredded! We don't have a final $$ amount yet because we're waiting for a check for a local business that came with a van FULL of boxes, but we expect the total to be in the $2,000 range. Not a bad fundraiser for our Charities Fund! Start saving papers now for next year's event!

This morning's meeting was well led by Community Services Chair, Gretchen Derda, in the absence of our President, President-Elect, and President Designee. Rusty Cready was inducted as our newest member, #19 this year! Mor Howland was our speaker this morning talking about The Shop Class-A DIY Community Workshop. Brant Bills presented the club with a framed copy of the Rotary Code of Ethics that a friend gave him. Once again, a fine meeting of friendship, networking, and a lot of laughs. DON'T FORGET OUR SHREDDING EVENT THIS SATURDAY, 10:00 to 2:00, 2015 Neuse Blvd., across from the hospital.

Last Thursday, at our evening Rotary meeting, Dr. Deb Milkowski of New Bern, gave an interesting presentation on the Walk With A Doc program - the 3rd Saturday of every month, at 9:00 am. Walkers meet at the Walking Trail Shelter (2nd shelter on the right) at Creekside Park. Dogs and children are welcome to Walk, as long as they are on a lease - the dogs, not the children!

Our evening meetings are every 2nd and 4th Thursday evening, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, at the Ghent Event Center on MLK Blvd.

There is no evening meeting this week. The next meeting is Thursday, June 11.

Mark your calendars because we are marching in the Juneteenth Parade on Saturday, June 20. This will be lots of fun with hard candies available to the parade watchers. Gretchen will have more on this at the meeting.
