This morning's meeting was well led by Community Services Chair, Gretchen Derda, in the absence of our President, President-Elect, and President Designee. Rusty Cready was inducted as our newest member, #19 this year! Mor Howland was our speaker this morning talking about The Shop Class-A DIY Community Workshop. Brant Bills presented the club with a framed copy of the Rotary Code of Ethics that a friend gave him. Once again, a fine meeting of friendship, networking, and a lot of laughs. DON'T FORGET OUR SHREDDING EVENT THIS SATURDAY, 10:00 to 2:00, 2015 Neuse Blvd., across from the hospital.

Last Thursday, at our evening Rotary meeting, Dr. Deb Milkowski of New Bern, gave an interesting presentation on the Walk With A Doc program - the 3rd Saturday of every month, at 9:00 am. Walkers meet at the Walking Trail Shelter (2nd shelter on the right) at Creekside Park. Dogs and children are welcome to Walk, as long as they are on a lease - the dogs, not the children!

Our evening meetings are every 2nd and 4th Thursday evening, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, at the Ghent Event Center on MLK Blvd.

Our meeting Thursday morning was highlighted with our first presentation of grants under our new grant program. We presented Bonita Simmons on behalf of My Sister's House with a grant for $250 for new towels and bedding for residents and overnight staff. The second grant was presented to Ann Marie Devanney on behalf of RCS ($2,494) for upgrading their pantry and warehouse with new equipment to keep their food fresh for serving the vulnerable population in our community. See pictures attached.

Our guest speaker was Amanda Delgado, Executive Director of Coastal Center for Hope & Healing, who described several of their services provided to individuals who have been victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. In all, Amanda's program reaches residents of Craven, Jones and Pamlico Counties affected by domestic and family violence, sexual assault, stalking, cyberstalking, and harassment through a 24/7 crisis hotline, court advocacy, support groups, transportation and housing support. MEMORIAL DAY - REMEMBRANCE

On this day let's remember and honor those military personnel who died in service of their country. Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day was first celebrated some three years after the end of the Civil War, which claimed more lives than any other conflict in US history.

This week Jon Burger, Executive Director of the Craven County Arts Council, reminded many of us why we moved to New Bern. His leadership and support of local artists through his coordination of numerous artistic events have contributed to the cultural diversity of the New Bern area. The downtown art-walk the 2d Friday of the month is a town favorite activity. Another event attracting over 200 people was the painting of murals at The Chelsea and Flying Fox hosted by Craven Arts Council & Gallery on May 3rd. The goal was to bring more public art to the area with community involvement, hoping to create a more vibrant downtown.

Jon added to the community's cultural diversity with the purchase of a 31foot airstream which he converted into an art classroom. Jon has also coordinated the New Bern Artists Studio Tour showcasing local artists allowing the public to visit the studios and purchase artwork directly from the artist, occurring in November. See pictures attached.

Visiting us for the second time was Margie Dunn of Coldwell Banker who is sponsored by George Ortega. Welcome Margie and please come back again.

Member Micheal Macy displayed old, but interesting, watches he has repaired for possible purchase by members. The purchase price goes to Paul Platek on behalf of the Foundation.

Member David Whitley gave us an interesting update about the impact on Alzheimer's through your biological age v. your chronological age. AARP has more information on this issue.

Those of us who were kids in the early and mid-1950s remember or parents worrying about us getting Polio, and I remember worrying about being in an Iron Lung! I was ready for the vaccine!

Rotary's promise to the children of the world in 1985 was the eradication of Polio and End Polio Now is still working to ensure this can happen. We CANNOT go backwards and refuse this and other vaccines that make us all safer and healthier!
