New Berlin 4-H Club

New Berlin 4-H Club Tired of your family running to all ends of the earth... We are a FAMILY 4-H CLUB. The kids are invo 4-H is a fun, informal youth centered educational program.

Youth (boys & girls) have fun by joining and participating in hands-on learning in projects, activities or special events. Youth are guided via adult interaction in their areas of interest by the teaching of life skills. The majority of the Waukesha County 4-H membership is in community based 4-H clubs. Clubs usually meet monthly to conduct business, have activities and an educational program. Pro

ject meetings and family activities are held outside of the monthly club general meeting. Youth participate in 4-H by enrolling in project work which focuses on subjects such as pet care, dogs, cats, drawing and painting, models, rockets, gardening and clowning. There are over 80 projects youth can enroll in. Youth also participate in activities which emphasize either individual or team experiences. Examples include: drama, music, basketball, public speaking and community service. Youth are asked to maintain a Record Book, or similar document, which reflects and serves as the official record of their 4-H participation. This Record Book provides supporting documentation as the member continues in the 4-H program for awards, scholarships and trips.

Mark your calendars for July 12th! Our Summer Meet & Greet that is open to the public is only one week away! From 10 am to 12 pm, you may meet our animal ambassadors and enjoy games, face painting, and ice cream.

If you haven't already, secure your spot for one of our Behind-the-Scenes Tours. For a small fee of $15, experience the rare opportunity to tour our animal hospital and these tours sell out quickly! This area is closed to the public so this will be your only chance until next summer to see where the animals you bring us are cared for. Each tour lasts 45-minute and will be led by our amazing Animal Care Director, Elisa Fosco.

As winter begins to fade away, great horned owls have already been nesting across Wisconsin. These year-round residents are well adapted to the chilly temperatures and are able to give their young, called owlets, a head start!

Great horned owlets are one of the first wildlife species to hatch every year, typically from late February through mid-April. They are blind, immobile and covered in down when they hatch, so they rely on parent birds for care during the first few weeks of life.

At around 6 weeks old, owlets have traded a lot of their fluffy down for adult-like feathers and become more independent, often “branching” out of the nest before they are fully developed. It is common to see them on the ground and they will often lift their wings, hiss and clack their beak to scare off predators. They may not fly away if approached because they are still developing their flying skills but will often climb back up the tree or fly away once alone.

Remember: an owlet’s best chance of survival is with their parents! Always contact the DNR or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for advice before intervening if you think an owlet is too young to be out of the nest.
