Volunteer New Bedford

Volunteer New Bedford Volunteer New Bedford is a citywide initiative dedicated to encouraging volunteerism and community service.

Volunteer New Bedford is a citywide initiative dedicated to responding to community needs and improving the quality of life for city residents by fostering and encouraging a culture of volunteerism and community service. Created in 2008 with assistance from the Massachusetts Service Alliance, the GIVING Network (as the initiative was originally called) was a collaboration of City departments, regi

onal community organizations, and local agencies united by a common interest in promoting volunteerism in Southeastern Massachusetts. Renamed Volunteer New Bedford after the City joined the nationwide Cities of Service initiative in 2009, VNB continues to work with local organizations, government departments, and educational institutions to engage citizens in community service. Volunteer requests from city departments and local non-profit agencies are posted weekly on Facebook at Volunteer New Bedford, on the VolunteerSouthcoast database at the UnitedWayofGNB.org, and on Twitter to help more residents connect to service opportunities more easily, and a volunteer application form is available for download on the City’s website at Volunteer New Bedford. Volunteers who serve at non-profit organizations located within downtown New Bedford are eligible to apply for a Volunteer Parking Pass, which offers free parking in the Elm Street Garage and Zeiterion Garage while participants are working their volunteer shifts. Downtown organizations with volunteers who wish to participate in the Volunteer Parking Pass Program should contact Mali Lim in the Department of Community Services at [email protected].

A Repair Café is a free, community-based event where skilled volunteers help neighbors fix broken household items—such as electronics, furniture, clothing, and bicycles—to reduce landfill waste and encourage a sustainable, repair-focused culture. Similar to the Fix It Forward clinics we're running in New Bedford, Repair Cafes are a way to share skills and resources in the community. For those who missed the Fix It Forward knife sharpening workshop this past Tuesday, the Repair Cafe will be holding a knife sharpening class this coming Saturday. Learn valuable skills and meet others interested in promoting sustainable ways of living!
