Congratulations to Poet Everett Hoagland!
The African American Literature and Culture Society has selected him as the 2023 recipient of the Stephen Henderson Award. The award will be presented during a reception at the conference of the American Literature Association in Boston, May 26.
The Henderson Award was the earliest of the awards sponsored by the Society, and was originally proposed by the late Wilfred Samuels in honor of Professor Stephen Henderson, a prominent poetry scholar and editor/author of UNDERSTANDING THE NEW BLACK POETRY: BLACK SPEECH AND BLACK MUSIC AS POETIC REFERENCES (1973).
Everett Hoagland continues to be the creator of the new in texts ranging from 1970's BLACK VELVET through SCRIMSHAW, THIS CITY AND OTHER POEMS, HERE: NEW AND SELECTED POEMS, HOMECOMING, THE MUSIC AND OTHER SELECTED POEMS, and more.
He has been recognized previously with a Gwendolyn Brooks Award, a Foreword Award and the Langston Hughes Society Award, among other honors, and has appeared in many anthologies, including BEST AMERICAN POETRY and more recently BLACK FIRE THIS TIME.
A graduate of Lincoln and Brown Universities, Hoagland is now Emeritus Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. He was the first Poet Laureate of New Bedford.
