Squonkapalooza returns to Johnstown on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, and yes, Pennsylvania has officially reached the point where even our saddest cryptid gets its own party. The free, all-ages festival celebrates the Squonk, the famously miserable creature from Pennsylvania folklore said to wander the hemlock forests crying over its own appearance. The legend dates back to old lumberwoods folklore, with one of the earliest written accounts appearing in Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods in 1910. Naturally, Johnstown looked at that and said, “You know what this needs? Vendors, music, cosplay, food, games, speakers, and thousands of people trying to cheer up a woodland crybaby.”
The festival features cryptid and folklore speakers, local and independent art vendors, live music, entertainers, food, Squonk Quest, games, and a cosplay contest, making it feel like a Pennsylvania folklore convention mixed with an arts festival and a very weird family reunion. While you’re in Johnstown, it’s worth checking out the Johnstown Flood Museum, Heritage Discovery Center, the Steve Ditko Spider-Man mural, Grandview Cemetery, and the Johnstown Flood National Memorial nearby. For food and drinks, local stops like Stone Bridge Brewing, Balance Restaurant, and Asiago’s Tuscan Italian Restaurant are good names to keep on the list, especially if you want to turn the trip into a full Johnstown day instead of just driving in, buying a Squonk sticker, and leaving before the creature has time to emotionally attach.
