The Legion of Honor is the highest French decoration from the government of France. It is awarded to not only French citizens but to those who demonstrated outstanding merits in the service of the nation in a military capacity. This includes WWII Veterans who aided in the liberation of France from the tyranny of the Germans.

On Thursday, February 15th the Consul General of France from Atlanta will present the French Legion of Honor to one of our own – Mr. John “J. D.” Roberts. The venue will be at the Magnolia Civic Center in the Cine at 3:30 pm.

Private J. D. Roberts will be among many Americans who have received this award: SGT Alvin York, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, Lt. Audie Murphy, and Gen. George Patton, to name a few.

The entire community is invited. You don’t want to miss this occasion because it is the first of these awards to be presented in Union County and it may never happen again.

Post 72 had a great day at New Albany Tallahatchie Riverfest 2023. We handed out Legion Family brochures, gave US flags to children, offered Poppies, and sold tickets for an opportunity to win a Henry Golden Boy. The Bennetts and the Hortons took time out to greet Kenidi Sanders, Miss New Albany 2023.

Union County Patriot Day Service – Monday, September 11, 2023 at 12:00 noon at the Magnolia Civic Center in the Cine Theater

Following the events of September 11, 2001 President George Bush declared a day of remembrance and subsequently Congress expanded the day to include a remembrance of all the sacrifices our citizens have made over the years to keep our country free. Many of those sacrifices have come from Union County, Mississippi.

The American Legion Potter-Henry-Lowrey Post and Unit 72 are hosting this service. Please join us in the Cine Theater as Post 72 Commander Teddy James will lead in a time of remembrance. The program will be about 50 minutes in length. Recognition will be given to all city, county, and state law enforcement, EMT personnel, fire department personnel as well as elected officials.

CW4 Mark Stevens, US Army, Retired will be the keynote speaker. Mr. Stevens retired on February 28th, 2023 after 40 years of service to the United States Army and the Mississippi Army National Guard.

Memorial Day: I place before you these names forever inscribed on The Vietnam Memorial Wall. These men gave their last full measure during my tour of duty. There are 23 names from the two units I served with – D Co. 5/7th First Air Cav and D Co. 1/50th Mechanized attached to the First Air Cav. The other 8 names are those from my home county for the last 55 years. When my wife and I saw the Wall from a distance, it didn’t look very foreboding. But as we approached the first panel on the West end and then walking towards the middle, it hit me that so many gave their lives. I could take it no longer, for I collapsed to my knees. After I regained my composure, I commenced to finding all 31 names and humbly made a rubbing of each.
