🎸💜 Rockin’ Recovery on the River 💜🎸

What a beautiful evening spent in community, recovery, and fellowship at BreakAway’s Rockin’ Recovery on the River event!

Project Recovery Southern Indiana was honored to be on-site with our outreach team, including Tracy, Sarah, Shawne, Billy, Brian, and even former intern Savannah and her husband, Sam. The only team member missing was Sherri—we certainly felt her absence!

The weather could not have been more perfect, and the turnout was incredible. It was encouraging to see so many people come together to celebrate recovery, support one another, and enjoy an evening filled with hope and connection.

A special shoutout to The GOATS, who absolutely rocked the amphitheater and kept the energy high all evening long. Their performance was fantastic and helped create an atmosphere of joy and celebration.

Events like these serve as a reminder that recovery is not something we do alone. It happens in community, through connection, support, and people willing to show up for one another.

Thank you to The Breakaway Recovery for hosting such a wonderful event and for all you do to support women on their recovery journeys. We are grateful to stand alongside organizations that share the belief that recovery is possible and that every person deserves hope, dignity, and a chance to heal.

All. Of. This 👏

All. Of. This 👏

Today, a reporter reached out to ask whether we have seen or heard about increased violence toward the unhoused community.

Our response was simple: when advocates talk about “vulnerability,” this is exactly what we mean.

Vulnerability is not just exposure to the elements. It is the daily reality of micro and macro aggression and violence experienced by unhoused people. It is harassment by law enforcement. It is people having their personal property destroyed. It is assaults, robberies, and in the most extreme cases, murder.

While these incidents are not exclusively tied to Kentucky’s relatively recent criminalization of homelessness, policies that push people out of visible or safer spaces absolutely increase vulnerability. When people are forced into isolation, away from well-lit areas, away from community, and away from the relative safety of being surrounded by others who are also surviving on the street, the risks grow dramatically.

A safe place to exist matters.

People deserve somewhere they can sleep without fear of violence. Somewhere they can keep the few belongings they have without them being destroyed. Somewhere they are treated as human beings instead of problems to be removed from public view.

This is why advocates continue to speak out. Because criminalization does not solve homelessness — it makes surviving it even more dangerous.

Today’s harm reduction mobile pop-up was once again a powerful reminder that this work is about so much more than supplies—it’s about people. 💜

Today we had a team of three: Tracy, Sara, and Shawne. It was wonderful to have Shawne back out volunteering with us again.

While Shawne and Sara continued along the outreach route distributing snack bags and essential supplies, Tracy spent much of the afternoon tending to the mental health needs of two of our participants.

One participant was assisted with scheduling an individual therapy appointment, while another was experiencing a mental health crisis and requested help connecting to inpatient care for stabilization. Tracy remained present to ensure the participant’s safety and support until appropriate arrangements were made. The participant was safely transported to the facility .

Meanwhile, Sara and Shawne continued meeting people where they are—providing supplies to help meet immediate basic needs, including 35 snack bags, hygiene items, and harm reduction resources.

This work reflects something deeply important: before healing, recovery, or stability can happen, people must first have their most basic needs met. Food. Safety. Shelter. Human connection. This is the foundation of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and it’s something we witness firsthand every single week. When people know they are safe, supported, and cared for, hope begins to grow.

We also want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our community partners who made themselves available today to help us respond to the mental health needs of some of our most vulnerable neighbors. Collaboration like this saves lives and reminds us that none of this work happens alone.

Together, we continue to show up—with compassion, dignity, and hope. 💜
