🎉 VACA HAS TWO ONCE AWARDS FINALISTS! 🎉

We are incredibly proud to announce that two members of VACA's leadership team have been named finalists for the 2026 ONCE Awards! 🏆🏆

💙 Katie Morgan, Founder & Executive Director, is a finalist for the Kightlinger & Gray, LLP Sam Day Professional of the Year Award.
💛 Brian Morgan, Volunteer Director, is a finalist for the Duke Energy Kevin Hammersmith Community Leader of the Year Award.

For a small nonprofit like VACA, having two members of our team recognized for leadership and community service in the same year is pretty darn special.

Katie and Brian have both poured countless hours into VACA and our community—advocating for vulnerable adults, supporting our volunteers, serving veterans, building partnerships, and stepping up wherever they're needed.

Now we need the help of our VACA family! 💙💛

🗳️ Please take a moment to vote for BOTH Katie and Brian—and share this post so we can get the word out!

No matter what happens on awards night, we're incredibly proud to have them representing VACA.

But... we're certainly not opposed to bringing home two trophies. 😉🏆🏆

Congratulations, Katie & Brian!

✨ Become a Sponsor for VACA’s “Senior Prom: A Prom for Purpose” ✨

Get ready for a night of music, memories, laughter, and impact — all while helping protect vulnerable seniors and incapacitated adults in our community.

Vulnerable Adult Care Advocates, Inc. is currently seeking sponsors for our upcoming Senior Prom Gala, a one-of-a-kind fundraising event benefiting local elderly adults living with dementia, cognitive decline, and other life challenges when no family is willing or able to help.

Your sponsorship does more than put your business name on a banner. It helps provide:

💜 Safe housing
💜 Medical advocacy
💜 Guardianship services
💜 Protection from abuse and exploitation
💜 Dignity and compassion for vulnerable adults in crisis

This event is open to ALL adults — because everyone deserves a chance to dance for a cause that matters.

From elegant décor and nostalgic prom fun to powerful stories of impact, this will be a night our community won’t forget. And yes… there will absolutely be dancing. 💃🕺

We have multiple sponsorship levels available and would love to partner with businesses, organizations, and community leaders who believe our seniors deserve protection, dignity, and a voice.

‘People with dementia are brushed to the side, they are not on the radar. Cancer has a pathway, with dementia you still have to navigate it all yourself.’

Adam works for Alzheimer’s Society, and cared for his beloved mum, Alice, who had vascular dementia. Sadly, Adam’s dad, Tony, also passed away from cancer during his mum’s illness.

‘After Mum’s diagnosis, I tried to navigate the disease myself as best I could, trying to find out what would happen and how to look after Mum, with no support from the GP or the Memory Clinic.

‘When Dad was diagnosed with cancer, his care included Macmillan Nurses as part of his Cancer Pathway. This was in sharp contrast to Mum’s dementia, which had no clear pathway and no care allocation.

‘After Dad died in 2020, Mum deteriorated more quickly.

‘I reached out to ask for help, but I felt isolated, without any clear support network. There was no support from the GP, Memory Clinic or Social Services.

'I did a lot on my own. I was never given any literature or signposted to organisations for support.

‘The Social Worker did put a care package in place, but I needed to be Mum’s advocate and fight for everything. I had 4 different Social Workers in 12 months and I found it challenging to negotiate their duty and understand what we were entitled to.

‘I was Mum’s full-time carer, doing the best I could. I was so stressed that I once called the paramedics as I thought I was having a heart attack!

‘In 2022, Social Services said they could not pay the level of home support that they had been and either I give up my job or Mum would have to go into a care home.

‘I could not afford to give up my job as we couldn’t exist on the Carer’s Allowance, so Mum moved into a care home. She passed away in early 2023.

‘Social Services should have people who are specialists in dementia and have more extensive training to support families and people affected. Right now, it is a postcode lottery for the care and services available across the UK.

‘I hope by telling my story I can help others who are caring for a loved one with a dementia diagnosis.’

LATE-STAGE DEMENTIA

As the final stage of dementia gains momentum, this progressive, incurable disorder requires complete care 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. Your loved one’s body will begin to shut down, and he or she will become dependent on your unconditional love and commitment for every aspect of life.
Dementia progresses differently in every individual, making it impossible to predict how long your loved one will live. Red required over a year of end-stage care, while other patients may require only a few days. According to helpguide.org, the average duration can be from one to three years.

Although your loved one may not be able to speak, his or her emotional memories may linger. Create a relaxed atmosphere to preserve his dignity and well-being through his final chapter of life. Your caring presence, voice, and physical contact will be an immense comfort to your loved one.

Yesterday, I had the honor of speaking with the residents at Riverbend about something that’s becoming far too common—scams targeting our senior community.

We talked about the tactics scammers use, how quickly things can escalate, and most importantly, how to protect themselves. But more than anything, we talked about awareness, empowerment, and knowing they are not alone.

Standing in that room, I was reminded exactly why I do this work.
Our seniors built this community. They raised families, served others, and created the foundation we all stand on today. They deserve to feel safe, respected, and protected—not targeted.
At VACA, Inc., this isn’t just part of what we do—it’s personal.

Every conversation, every connection, every moment spent advocating matters. Because behind every story is a person who deserves dignity and someone willing to stand up for them.
If you have a loved one—or even a neighbor—take a moment to check in, share information, and help them stay informed. A simple conversation can make all the difference.
We’re all in this together. ❤️
