The Iowa Barn Foundation Founded in 1997, the Iowa Barn Foundation is dedicated to preserving Iowa's agriculture heritage

Founded in 1997, the Iowa Barn Foundation (IBF) is dedicated to preserving Iowa's rural buildings, symbols of Iowa's early agricultural heritage. The Iowa Barn Foundation, works to preserve Iowa's agricultural history and endangered barns by educating people in Iowa -- and beyond -- about our rural heritage and the importance of barn preservation. This is being accomplished through the bi-annual I

owa Barn Foundation Magazine, the Iowa Barn Foundation web site, the annual All-State Barn Tour, and through picnics, open meetings, and through worldwide publicity in newspapers, magazines, and television. The IBF provides matching grants to property owners to help restore qualified barns. The Iowa Barn Foundation gives Awards of Distinction to those property owners who restore or rehabilitate their barns at their own expense. In addition, the Iowa Barn Foundation is committed to farm conservancy and now accepts economically and financially self-sustaining farms and farmland.

The Iowa Barn Foundation has refreshed our 40% paint discount on Diamond Vogel Paints, now owned by Spectrum Paint. Labor is the biggest cost of painting a barn, so using quality paint ensures you won't have to paint again any sooner than necessary.

IBF Members - Does anyone have an extra copy of our Fall 2001 magazine?

Dave Austin, volunteer magazine editor and web admin, is working to digitize all of our historical issues for the website. This is one issue that he does not have an original copy of for the IBF archives.

Please let us know if you have a copy you would be willing to part with.

Thanks!

The barn on the 1898 Houge Farmstead in Polk County is believed to have been built in 1903. The 40 ft long barn features a large open area in the middle for hay and straw storage. The north lean-to housed work horses. The south lean-to housed a dozen shorthorn dairy cattle.

Dairy continued in the barn until the 1950s. In the 1970s, the dairy wing was converted to swine farrowing crates. Today, the farmstead is used to finish steers.

Enjoy a virtual tour of this beautiful barn that has been in the care of the same family for 128 years.

We hope to feature the story behind this barn in the Fall 2027 issue of our magazine which is sent twice a year to our member donors. Not a member donor yet? Sign up today, and we will get our 52-page spring issue in the mail ASAP with full details on our June 27-28 barn tour in Jefferson County. https://iowabarnfoundation.org/product/membership/
