May has been an exciting and busy month at Sierra Streams Institute! In addition to celebrating our 30th anniversary at Sierra Streams Fest, we also celebrated the graduation of the eighth cohort of California Naturalists trained through our California Naturalist Program.

When our volunteers are our collecting data for water quality monitoring, sometimes they make new friends. Check out this gorgeous mayfly that landed on the hand of our volunteer Quinn!

Welcome our new Field Technician, Mae Nisbet!

Mae grew up in a very small town in Northern California called Georgetown. She is a recent graduate of Sacramento State University with a degree in Environmental Studies. She came to work with SSI because she had previously interned with the organization during the 2025 field season. This is when she fell in love with field work, and conservation through community science. Mae is an avid backpacker, hiker, snowboarder, and a beginner rock climber. She has a wild fascination with bugs and their odd beauty, so I have spent some time collecting only bug tattoos. Some of her favorite locations in California include Auburn, Mammoth Lakes, Joshua Tree, and of course my backyard the El Dorado National Forest. She is very excited to begin work with Sierra Streams again, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of her life learning.

This past Saturday we got to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Sierra Streams Institute with a hands on science and art festival, Sierra Streams Fest. Our fundraising team had been working on organizing this event for months, stepping into the unknown with our first ever major event. It all started in our board room with board members and staff listing off different ideas, partners, and “what ifs”. This event began to blossom and grow as we reached out to to some of the many organizations we have worked with over the years. We didn’t want a traditional tabling event, so we asked them if they would be willing to bring in a hands on art or science activity to share with the community. The enthusiasm and creativity in their responses made it feel like we were on to something here.

This was the first time Sierra Streams had put together a large scale event in the community. We wanted to create an event focusing on the connection of science and art as a celebration of our 30th anniversary.

We were so happy to see everyone having a fantastic time and engaging in art and science activities.

From everyone here at SSI, we want to say thank you to our community for coming together for an AMAZING event this past weekend. You all really made this event great and we are grateful to be part of this community.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Roki Kilroy will no longer be performing at Sierra Streams Fest. We are fortunate enough to have Juliet Gobert performing in her place.

Juliet Gobert is a Northern California songwriter whose original “Back Porch Americana” has earned her a place on stages at many of the state’s premier festivals and venues. Praised for her crystal-clear voice and emotionally rich songwriting, Juliet’s music — rooted in everyday stories of love, loss, family, and home — continues to resonate deeply with listeners wherever she performs.

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow at Sierra Streams Fest!
