The swimming hole that my dad went to during his childhood. Obviously an old mine stripping hole he told me they called it "The Buck," and that it was very close to Mauch Chunk / Jim Thorpe. He remembered that it was not easy to get to. They had to climb ladders and cross makeshift bridges to get there from Nesquehoning. The Blue Ponds that I remember going to were much closer to Nesquehoning. This photo was probably taken 1945-47. Thanks to my niece Chrissy Devore for sharing the picture.

The Nesquehoning Historical Society is pleased to announce another event in a series of Local History Presentations as part of Carbon County & Nesquehoning’s America250 Celebration. Local historian and author Vince Hydro will narrate a visual presentation entitled: “Asa Packer’s People: The Story of the Packer Family.”

Join us for either of two showings; doors open an hour before the presentation.

Monday, August 31, 2026, at 6:00 pm
And
Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 12:00 Noon

This event will include a visual presentation of the history of the children of Asa and Sarah Packer. Among many other achievements, Asa Packer was the founder of the Lehigh Valley Railroad, Lehigh University and St. Luke’s Hospital. In Asa Packer’s People, historian and author Vince Hydro relates the history of the children of Asa and Sarah Packer, based upon documented sources, and sets these stories against the myths and rumors that have been perpetuated over the years about this family.

These presentations will take place at the NHS Museum, 157 West Railroad Street, Corner of Ratcliff and Railroad Sts. in Nesquehoning. There is ample parking available in the large lot located next to the Museum, however, we have filled up the lot at recent events. Come early to get a good parking spot and seat in the Museum.

This event is open to the public free of charge, although donations to the Historical Society are appreciated, and enable the society to maintain the Museum and presentation space.
