Joe, along with his wife Mary, were both very avid fans of their children, daughter Diane (CHS '77), son Joey (CHS '78), & also their Grandson Zak Leddy (CHS '04), with all three participating in Track & Zak a Soccer Scholar Athlete. The couple traveled everywhere & always took movies & pictures, & Mary still continues to be a pillar for her Family. The first set of awards were presented in 2006.
Since the inception of the original awards, son, Joey Meeko, a former Mr. America/Mr. Universe, died on December 8, 2009. Upon his death, the Family added two more awards: JOSEPH JOHN MEEKO MEMORIAL HUMANITARIAN AWARD in Joe's memory & also an award to honor Mary ... MARY B. MEEKO HUMANITARIAN AWARD. Both Joey & Mary are true Humanitarians ... caring & helping everyone. Joey had attended the 2009 Awards assembly. Diane, who worked in the Guidance Office from 1992-96, picked up a TYPING AWARD, which changed to a WORD PROCESSING AWARD, & then to a WEB PAGE DESIGN AWARD ... until the category/award ended in 2010. The awards started for Mr. Meeko were from monetary donations, in lieu of flowers. Extenuating circumstances did not allow the Meeko Family to have a memorial service for Joey; therefore, donations in lieu of flowers continued in his memory. Every year these awards will continue to honor numerous CHS students/athletes and their accomplishments. The Meeko Family plans to continue with this tradition. Anyone who has not had the opportunity to contribute is surely encouraged to do so, & those that already have made their donation(s) -- THANK YOU!
