This badge of the Washington Headquarters Association is a distinctive artifact that links the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to female-led projects to preserve the sites of the American Revolution. Created by several chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Washington Headquarters Association successfully advocated for the preservation of the building used as George Washington's headquarters in 1776 during the Battle of Harlem Heights in New York. Today, this building is known as the Morris-Jumel Mansion, and it remains open to the public.

Made of 14-karat gold and suspended by a blue and white ribbon, this beautifully crafted badge features a vibrant blue and white enamel five-pointed star resting over a victory wreath. The mansion appears in the center of the pendant. Above the ribbon, a gold bar features two dates: 1776 and 1904, the year that the Washington Headquarters Association was incorporated.

Presented to the Unknown Soldier on behalf of the association, this badge represents just one of the many patriotic societies that have felt called to honor the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and connect their mission to the Tomb. As we commemorate America’s 250th birthday, this badge also helps tell the story of American women's dedication to preserving the nation's past and honoring the military.
