Intergenerational dialogue is essential for lifelong learning. Bringing together many voices creates space to share knowledge, challenge perspectives and build stronger communities. It reflects Loretto values, commitment to justice and peace, care for the earth, a global community, and education, showing how learning across generations can shape more informed and connected action.

If you want an opportunity to join Loretto at the UN in intergenerational work sign up below. Registration deadline is Friday, June 5. https://www.lorettocommunity.org/event/intergenerational-delegation-to-the-united-nations-high-level-political-forum-on-sustainable-development/

In his writing, Henry David Thoreau urges us to “... take up a little life into our pores.” These daisies called to me this morning as a response to his invitation to “take up a little life.” In other words, to allow myself to be open and receptive to life around me. What is your response today? Maybe it’s a nap or the laughter of a child or simple beauty or saying “no” to something that isn’t yours to do or ... Whatever it is, may life be nourished in and through us today as we take life “into our pores.”

2025-'26 Loretto Justice Fellow Elizabeth O'Hara shares her Spring reflection:

"My brother and I took time to catch up the other day. Like any siblings, we lead very different lives despite living under the same roof. He brought up a dinner he attended the other night. It wasn’t a tense dinner, but one where comments made didn’t sit right with him and he didn’t know why. While listening to him, it occurred to me that even though I wasn’t present at this dinner I understood what was going on.

"Through serving at my placement site, I’ve learned to read between the lines on a more nuanced level. I had the opportunity to meet people from different paths of life. I listened to their stories and didn’t realize the impact that had. One of my duties at our community center — Alamito — was to capture moments."

2025-'26 Loretto Justice Fellow Debbie Ledesma reflects on her time with Ciudad Nueva:

"When I first walked into orientation with Loretto Justice Fellowship and Ciudad Nueva, I was stepping into a world that was entirely new to me, unfamiliar with the work, the community and the deeper rhythms of what justice truly looks like in practice. What I could not have anticipated was how profoundly this experience would change me. Over the course of my practicum placement, I grew in ways I never expected emotionally, culturally, personally and spiritually. Meeting incredible people whose stories and spirits left marks on my heart, and working alongside young students who reminded me every single day why this work matters. They shaped me in ways that words simply cannot capture. Along the way, I also experienced the heartache of losing loved ones. Losses that, as painful as they were, taught me some of life’s most profound lessons and served as a gentle but powerful reminder to be present, to cherish each moment and to never take for granted the time we have with the people and work that mean the most to us. I came to understand communities that expanded my perspective and reshaped the way I see the world.

"Through every step of that growth, Annie was there a steady, unwavering presence whose check-ins were so much more than routine. Her encouragement held me up in moments of doubt, and her support reminded me that I was never walking this journey alone. I am deeply grateful for the connections I built, the fellows I met, the community I became a part of and the humbling and beautiful work of Loretto Justice Fellowship and Ciudad Nueva. And then there is Saul, someone I met on the very first day of orientation when we sat next to each other, neither of us knowing we would end up serving at the same practicum, let alone becoming like family. He became like a younger brother to me, and our friendship is one of the greatest gifts this experience gave me. Most of all, I am grateful for who I have become because of it all. I leave not as the person who walked in at orientation, but as someone deeply connected to this mission, forever shaped by it, and truly grateful for this amazing opportunity."

2025-2026 Loretto Justice Fellow Genesis Rodriguez shares her end of year reflection:

"What a journey this year has been from orientation until now. I still remember how nervous I was to begin this experience, and now it’s hard to believe that it’s already over. This journey also brought me closer to the El Paso and Loretto communities in such meaningful ways. I had the honor of completing my service with El Paso Villa Maria, where I was able to meet and work with women in many different stages of their lives. Through this experience, I witnessed firsthand how impactful and meaningful the work at Villa Maria truly is. The love, support and encouragement I received from the community made this experience even more special and unforgettable.

"Anthony Hincks once said, “Outside the window is a world that beckons and inside the window is a world for which the world yearns.” I feel this quote perfectly reflects my experience with the Loretto Justice Fellowship. Stepping outside of my comfort zone opened the door to new opportunities, relationships, and experiences that shaped me in ways I never expected, while also reminding me of the importance of community, compassion and human connection.

"One of the biggest takeaways is that even if you are scared or unsure, you should still go for it. You never know what incredible opportunities or inspiring people you may encounter along the way. The Loretto Justice Fellowship gave me exactly that, and it is an experience I will carry with me forever."

Loretto Justice Fellow Dani Felix shares her end of year reflection "Between Spaces."

"As my fellowship comes to an end, I have been thinking a lot about how important it is to find a sense of community, especially when it feels like there are fewer “third spaces” around us. Third spaces, places that exist outside of home and work, are meant to be areas where people can simply exist, connect, and feel supported. But it often feels like these spaces are harder to come by, especially in our day-to-day routines. That’s part of what made it feel so unexpected yet comforting to find this kind of space through Loretto, in what I originally perceived as a more academic and professional setting.

"Throughout my time in Loretto and participation in community meals, I found myself experiencing a level of vulnerability and openness that I had never imagined or expected to live and share through Loretto. With time, I quickly realized that my peers and I had more in common than I initially thought, even if our academic backgrounds or work experiences were completely different. From sharing personal stories of our childhoods to realizing how many of us had similar experiences growing up in Mexico or in the borderlands, I was reminded that there is so much more to each of us beyond school or work."

I’ve been thinking about Memorial Day and the phrase, “in the service,” to refer to someone in the military. In Elaine Prevallet SL’s 2002 booklet "In the Service of Life," she writes, “The deepest instinct for life, sometimes called the survival instinct, is what impels the individual members of species to get and to do what will contribute to the survival of their species, and hence to the larger, on-going process of life.”

I ask myself, in what ways do I feel compelled to protect the life of the human or other-than-human species? To what or to whom is my life energy “in the service?” And how do you answer those questions for yourself?

Loretto Justice Fellow Edward Smith completed his fellowship with the Opportunity Center and reflects on his experience:

"It has been six months since I finished my last reflection paper, and I cannot not believe how much has changed with not just myself but also with the people that I was connected to while in this fellowship. I know, having learned so many new things, that this will continue to be a life-changing and eventful year. I had not expected to have learned new skills while in this program such as leadership, tactics on remaining composed, and learning new ways to remain calm during stressful situations and staying grounded. I also did not expect to get back into my old hobby of drawing; it was a good way to de-stress whenever I felt like I was overwhelmed."

Here’s what some former students and Loretto supporters have said about their Loretto education over the years.

Elaine: “I had Great Sister Teachers at Immaculate Conception Grammar School. I still write O.S.J O.S.M. on the top of anything I write. Thank you all!”

Ann: “So thankful for our wonderful Sisters of Loretto at Bishop Machebeuf Catholic High School! We had a great education but equally as important, we had a great emphasis on social justice ideals. Thank you for sharing your gifts.”

Paloma: “In the ‘60s and early ‘70s we wrote OSJ (Oh Suffering Jesus) and OSM (Oh Sorrowful Mary) on the top corners of our paper.”

Alanna: “I’m not sure how many of the years I spent being educated by the sisters of Loretto that I wrote OSJ OSM in the upper left-hand corner of my paper. I dare say a lot.”

Maureen: “Sister Roberta was my art teacher at Nerinx Hall in the mid-‘70s … her art lab was a nurturing, creative space to develop visual skills and ideas that I still use to this day.”

Michael: “I had SLs at Holy Cross school in the West End of Louisville during the ‘50s. Wonderful memories.”

Cathy: “Sister Jeanne taught art at Loretto Academy in Kansas City where I attended from 1970 to 1974. Her art made our school special. We were all so lucky to learn from her. She also along with Sister Eleanor Craig led us on the first Oregon trail trip from Kansas City to Astoria, Oregon. I will always treasure how blessed I was to have this great adventure with her leading us.”
