TAKE ACTION ALERT - https://actioncenter.njea.org/the-time-to-fix-healthcare-for-nj-educators-is-now/

The time to fix healthcare for NJ educators is now
New Jersey is facing a healthcare crisis that is hurting all of us. Unless we act now, it's going to get worse. While Ch. 44 protects most NJEA members from directly paying the double-digit increases we are seeing in health insurance premiums, it does not protect us from the harm those increases are doing to district budgets. We already see districts cutting staff and programs and blaming those cuts on health insurance costs. And on Dec. 31, 2027, many of our protections in Ch. 44 will sunset, leaving us once again to fight with our school boards over the cost and quality of our health insurance.

The good news is that NJEA has a long history of achieving win-win solutions on healthcare that control overall costs without making members pay more or get less. We are ready to do that again, but we need the governor and Legislature to come to the table with us to implement those smart solutions together.

Please email the governor and your legislators today and ask them to work with us and other education stakeholders to fix our healthcare crisis. We have provided language for that email on the next page, but please feel free to add personalized information about how rising healthcare costs are hurting you and your district.

Stop High Transportation Costs that Hurt our Students
New Jersey's school districts are required to pay for non-public student transportation. In districts with high numbers of private school students, the cost of this transportation results in cuts that hurt our public school students. Ask your legislators to help fund transportation for non-public schools.

Support Aspiring NJ Educators – Invest in the Student Teacher Scholarship Program

New Jersey is experiencing a shortage of teaching staff, resulting in a staffing crisis in its public schools. The costs students incur to become teachers serve as a disincentive for some and a barrier for others; we need to help students and families afford the costs of the college education required to teach, making the profession more attractive.

A-3056/S-2605 establishes the NJ Student Teacher Scholarship Program. Under the bill, the program is to provide scholarships to students completing required clinical practice through a certificate of eligibility with an advanced standing educator preparation program at an institution of higher education in the State. A student is eligible to receive a scholarship of up to $7,200 for each semester of full-time clinical practice completed in a school in the State.

Act now and send a message to your legislators to let them know that we support those aspiring to enter the profession. Ask them to co-sponsor the bill and place it on the agenda as soon as the legislature returns to session.

Thank you to Assemblyman Sean Kean for taking the time to listen to the voices of educators, students, and families in Legislative District 30. Strong public schools depend on collaboration, respectful dialogue, and a shared commitment to student success. We appreciate every opportunity to engage with elected officials on the issues that matter most to New Jersey’s public schools and the communities they serve.
