New research in the American Journal of Psychiatry has shown that potentially combining escitalopram with one of two specific brain stimulation interventions - transcranial magnetic simulation (TMS) and electoconvulsive therapy (ECT) - can be considered effective in decreasing suicidal ideation. The analysis showed that in studies where only the intervention was utilized, only ECT was considered better than sham trials. In studies where both medication and the intervention were utilized, TMS was found to be effective as well. Given the struggles of patients with suicidal ideation to find improvement at times even with medication trials, this research shows a promising path to patient treatment.

Promising new research shows how GLP-1 agonists can support recovery from alcohol use disorder in patients with obesity. The Lancet published trial results showing patients who were receiving weekly injections of semaglutide were found to have a significant drop in alcohol use. The patients getting the semaglutide injections showed strong decreases in how much alcohol they drank, how much they drank per day, how much they craved alcohol, and more. However, it is important to know that patients getting the medicine were more likely to have GI side effects, which were noted mostly to be temporary. This finding illustrates a potential path for future treatments of alcohol use disorder co-morbid with obesity and even for the treatment of other substance use disorders.

Meet NJPA Member, Dr. Danah Atassi, DO! Dr. Atassi is currently completing her residency training and is looking forward to beginning her journey as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, she continues to impress us through her work managing the Association’s social media presence.

Throughout her time with the NJPA, Dr. Atassi has built meaningful friendships and found mentors who have been a tremendous source of strength during her training. She finds NJPA has been endlessly supportive of her professional growth and is excited to see what the future holds as she continues her involvement with the organization.

Fun Fact: Dr. Atassi used to write for the Chicago Tribune's teen newspaper, the Mash!

NJPA leaders are committed to advancing the Association’s mission through active engagement, collaboration, and service.

In April, this year’s leaders came together for the annual onboarding meeting, kicking off the new year with a renewed focus on leadership, governance, and their impact on the Association. The day was made even more meaningful by PRMS contributions, and we are truly appreciative of this valued partnership.

We couldn't be more excited for the leadership to begin their work and look forward to all they will accomplish in the year ahead.
