Crowder Industries began in 1969 with the vision of providing meaningful employment for mentally and physically handicapped adults. Many years ago severely disabled citizens were served through the state school system until they were 21 years old, and then vocational opportunities were almost non-existent. As a result of extensive lobbying initiated by Frank Ackerman, a father concerned with his s

on's future after state school, Senate Bill 52 was passed. Thus, the Extended Employment Sheltered Workshop 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit program, administered through the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), was developed. In it's years of operation, Crowder Industries has grown at a steady pace with the initial support of the local industry base such as La-Z-Boy and K&S wire. The customer base has been increasing ever sense. La-Z-Boy Midwest has been instrumental since the day of inception, and continues their support with the ever increasing supply contracts to bring up employment for people with disabilities to 89 today. La-Z-Boy was also instrumental in the development of the Crowder Industries Recreational park when they donated the labor to clear and develop the land as well as provide the funds to build a basketball court, pavilion, and restrooms. This park is a big asset to Crowder Industries and their employees, and has provided them with a great deal of enjoyment in spring, summer and fall seasons during lunch breaks and annual picnic activities. Currently, Crowder Industries employs a total of approximately 115 people annually from Newton and McDonald counties through two programs serving persons to be considered unemployable. Extended sheltered employment for certified handicapped employees was and still is our number one goal. Severely disabled persons are placed at Crowder Industries through DESE. These employees make up 75% of our workforce. We also offer a vocational readiness program for persons who are employable due to temporary disability, or persons who need training or retraining. All of our employees are offered job development to initiate or improve appropriate employee attitudes and behaviors, and the development of job skill with the goal of increasing future employment opportunities. Their positive attitude towards attendance, safety, quality, company loyalty and job satisfaction are the main reasons for Crowder Industries' productivity achieving a high level of customer approval. Crowder Industries is one of only four workshops In Missouri that have the third highest average hourly wage paid to people with disabilities. We are constantly looking for new ways to increase our customer base and diversify time delivery. To insure Crowder Industries' future and safeguard meaningful long term employment for "our special people who make the difference", Crowder Industries relies heavily on the Neosho Industrial community and primarily Newton and McDonald Counties for continuing work order growth. We would like to thank the following industries for their generosity and long-standing support. Current Customers:

This year’s Crowder Industries Annual Picnic was a huge success, thanks to the incredible efforts of our volunteers and the generous support of our local business community. Many volunteers dedicated countless hours to planning and hosting the event, ensuring our employees and their families enjoyed a truly memorable day.

We are also deeply grateful to the many local businesses who invested in sponsorships and donated prizes and giveaways to our employees. Your contributions made the day extra special and are a shining example of community partnership at its best.

The picnic has become the most anticipated event of the year for our employees, and it’s easy to see why. Attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch cooked by our local firefighters and served by the Public Administrator’s Office, received commemorative T-shirts, and took home prizes and surprise giveaways.

Fun was everywhere—from games and contests to our always-popular co****le tournament, pie-eating contest, and dress-up competition. In addition, we proudly recognize employees for their years of service, with awards ranging from 5 to 50 years—a tradition that honors the dedication and loyalty of our team.

Together, these efforts created a day where employees left feeling valued, appreciated, and blessed. We could not have done it without the generosity and teamwork of so many.

Thank you so much to everyone involved to make this day so special for our employees. We appreciate you.

Giving back to our community is at the heart of what we do—and there’s no better way to do it than with a little sweetness and a lot of heart. 💛
