Nebraska Pheasants Forever biologist John McClinton, Emma Raders, and Nate Pflueger got the opportunity to help with a youth pollinators event for York County Schools. This annual event is put on by the Corn Country Pheasants Forever Chapter. Youth from area schools get the opportunity to learn about pollinators, the need for pollinator habitat, and the importance of pollinators within our food systems. The students really enjoyed the outdoor portion of the day where they were able to get their hands dirty and each one helped establish pollinator habitat.

Green Fire Breaks are a great way to provide brood habitat and reduce risk of wildfire. Wildlife-focused plantings contain a mix of clovers, alfalfa, low growing warm & cool-season grasses and native wildflowers. Firebreaks should be mowed early season to remove thatch and followed up with another mow after the July 15th nesting season.

Happy Wednesday! Bullsnakes are excellent natural pest control. A single snake can eat large numbers of rodents that damage crops, spread disease, or dig burrows in pastures and roadsides.

In mid-May a group of PF/QF staff and volunteers from the Upland Caucus group travelled to Washington D.C. to meet with Senators and their staff to advocate for a Senate version of the Farm Bill. Their goal was to strengthen support for CRP by increasing rental rates on marginal and sensitive lands, restoring cost-share for management activities and updating payment limits.

Nebraska team members on the trip included Eastern NE Regional Representative Jackson Ellis, and chapter volunteers Stuart Anderson of Kearney County PF and Merlyn Nielsen of Seward County PF, among many other volunteers from across the country. The Upland Caucus group had meetings with over 30 Senate offices in the two days and had some great conversations discussing PF/QF legislative priorities and why they matter to our members and communities across the country.

Happy World Environment Day!

Today is a reminder of the importance of conserving and protecting the natural resources that support wildlife, agriculture, and future generations. From healthy grasslands and clean water to prescribed fire and habitat restoration, every effort made on the landscape helps keep Nebraska wild and thriving.

Whether you’re planting habitat, controlling invasive species, picking up trash, or simply spending time outdoors appreciating nature, thank you for doing your part. Small actions can make a big impact.
