The NCCF is the only community-based, tax-deductible fund that makes grants available that serve the educational & humanitarian needs in Nelson County, Virginia. (NCCF)* is an all-volunteer nonprofit that was started in 2000 by concerned community members to support our neighbors in need throughout the county. NCCF’s founders saw a need to channel charitable giving to local nonprofit groups target
ing at-risk populations. To date, NCCF has awarded $1.95 million in grants to 76 local agencies and programs that assist individuals with:
• Obtaining preventative health, dental & vision care, and prescription drugs;
• Paying rent & utilities, and repairing homes of our elderly and people with disabilities;
• Combating child hunger;
• Preparing for & affording college;
• Fighting substance abuse;
• Expanding environmental education; and addressing immediate needs, such as supporting COVID-19 vaccination efforts, and blood drives through the American Red Cross
Where does NCCF get its support? Funding for our grants comes largely from neighbors helping neighbors, that is, generous donors who live throughout this beautiful county of farms, orchards, and mountains. The Nelson County Community Fund (NCCF) is pleased to announce its next round of grants, with applications due no later than December 31, 2024. Each year, NCCF awards small grants to non-profit organizations and agencies serving families and communities in Nelson County. Application materials are available on the NCCF website: www.nelsonfund.org
Since its inception in 2020, NCCF has awarded 344 small grants totaling nearly $2.2 million. NCCF is a 501 C3 non-profit organization governed by an all-volunteer board.

Many good causes compete for your charitable donations such as those for health and humanitarian crises, disaster relief, poverty, housing, food and educational needs in faraway places. These needs are also present in Nelson County. That is why the Nelson County Community Fund (NCCF) was begun in 2000 – to channel local money into local community needs.
Now 17 years later, the $10,000 that Gordon Smyth originally seeded has grown like a Nelson County apple tree. Each year our crop of donations is transformed into grant-funded services benefiting residents in Nelson County.
Here’s the Summer 2020 list:
· The Heritage Center Food Pantry for its monthly distribution of food items to county residents in need.
· Nelson County Community Development Foundation for emergency home repairs for elderly and disabled residents.
· CASA of Central Virginia for recruitment of volunteers as Court Appointed Special Advocates for abused and neglected children.
· Unity in Community for residents needing help paying for rent, utility bills, medical fees, and household and personal items.
· American Red Cross of Central Virginia to cover the cost of two blood drives in Nelson County.
· Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline to support scouting activities reconfigured to meet Covid-19 safety precautions.
“There is no question that the current pandemic has placed more pressure on local nonprofits to help our Nelson County neighbors in need,” said NCCF president Peggy Whitehead. “Thanks to generous donations to NCCF, we can continue our grant-making to these organizations.”
