Huge shout out to our advocacy chair Stephanie for setting up coffee with a senator and to senator snodgrass for meeting with us!
When many nurses hear the word advocacy, they picture politicians, lawmakers, or people speaking on Capitol Hill. While advocacy can certainly happen there, it also begins with something much simpler: sharing your story.
As nurses, we witness the real-world impact of healthcare policies every day. We see patients struggling to afford medications, delays in access to care, staffing challenges, barriers to preventive services, and the effects of healthcare disparities.
Nurses are consistently ranked among the most trusted professionals in the United States. Policymakers, legislators, and community leaders want to hear from healthcare professionals who can explain how decisions affect real people.
When nurses share their experiences, they help shape policies that can:
● Improve patient access to care
● Expand preventive health services
● Support cancer screening and early detection efforts
● Improve affordability of medications and treatments
● Strengthen the nursing workforce
● Advance health equity
● Increase funding for healthcare research and innovation
● Improve workplace safety and staffing resources
The reality is that if nurses are not part of the conversation, decisions may be made without the perspective of those closest to patient care.
