Welcome Home.🇺🇸

On this day, March 29th, we honor the brave men and women who served during the Vietnam War.

Vietnam Veterans Day is a time to reflect, to recognize the sacrifices made, and to finally say what so many never heard when they came home: Thank you, and welcome home.

To the heroes who served, to those we lost, and to the families who carried the burden—you are not forgotten.

March 29, 1973 – The day the last U.S. combat troops left Vietnam.

Today, we remember. We honor. We welcome you home. 🇺🇸

We will not forget.
Mental health struggles affect our men and women in uniform every day, and silence only deepens that burden. As a fire service family, we must continue to stand together—breaking the stigma and creating real, positive change.
In the history of MFD On March 10th, the Milwaukee Fire Department lost a member to su***de. We honor their life by committing ourselves to connection, compassion, and action.
CHECK ON A FRIEND.
Research is clear: one of the most effective ways to prevent su***de is strong social connection.
Is there a friend, family member, or crew member you’ve been meaning to check on? Don’t wait. A phone call, text, or visit can be life-saving. Sometimes all it takes is letting someone know: “You are not alone.”
If you believe someone may be struggling, ask directly:
“Are you having thoughts of su***de?”
Asking does not cause harm—it opens the door to help.
If the answer is yes, maybe, or I’m not sure, get help immediately.
Call or text 988 (U.S. & Canada) for the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.
Members and families of the Milwaukee Fire Department can also reach out to the MFD Peer Support Team—confidential, compassionate, and here for you.
Taking care of each other is not a weakness.
It’s who we are.
It’s how we save lives—on and off the job.
đź’› You matter. We need you here.

The iconic Iwo Jima Flag Raising occurred on this day in 1945. Of the men in the photograph Sergeant Michael Strank, Corporal Harlon Block, and Private First Class Franklin Sousley were all killed in action. The other three Marines in the photograph were Corporals (then Privates First Class) Ira Hayes, Harold Schultz, and Harold Keller. These men all served as members of the 5th Marine Division.
This flag raising was the second that occurred atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima towards the end of the Pacific War. This image quickly became the symbol of the resilience of the US Marines during WWII. The photo was taken by Joe Rosenthal.

Today the State Senate passed legislation to expand worker’s compensation PTSD coverage to include all emergency medical service professionals!!
In 2021 Wisconsin Act 29 provided PTSD coverage to career firefighters, which has been a lifeline for some of our members. Action today will align worker’s compensation coverage for stand-alone EMS professionals with career firefighters. Access to comprehensive PTSD benefits ensures our members can recover fully and remain ready to serve.
We thank the senate for the strong bipartisan support and we look forward to Governor Evers signing the bill into law!
