This past week was the Needham Pack 8 Cub Scouts Pack Olympics. Originally scheduled for outdoors, the thunderstorms kept us inside. We still got in some traditional events including sack races, tug of war, ball tosses, relay races, and many more. As we enter June this upcoming week, we have our last Den and Pack meetings of the year starting with Den meetings on Tuesday. This includes a nice weekday hike for the 4th graders on Tuesday 6/2 at 6:30 (any current 4th graders are free to join - send us a message if you’re interested). Other grades will be meeting at the UCC at 6PM. Come join for some fun adventures, games, and activities.

Needham Pack 8 Cub Scouts was proud to have some of the Pack attend the Needham Memorial Day ceremonies at Memorial Field. Additionally, Needham Troop 13 marched from Needham Cemetery to the Town Common to Memorial Field for the respective wreath laying ceremonies. It was great to see our community out today to honor those who have fallen.

We received a few inquiries regarding Cub Scouts. Hopefully the info below is helpful.

- Q: Are Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts the same? A: Cub Scouts is the K-5 portion of Boy Scouts (Scouting America). Needham has 3 Cub Scout "Packs" - Packs 8, 4, and 23. Boy Scouts are for scouts in 6th-12th grades.

- Q: Besides ages, what are the other differences? A: Cub Scouts is led by parent leaders who plan, organize, and run the meetings. Meetings are twice a month, once as a Pack as a whole (all ages) and once as a Den (grade specific). Boy Scouts are youth led (under adult supervision) where the scouts themselves plan, organize, and run the meetings to develop leadership and organizational skills.

- Q: If I missed one or more years of Cub Scouts, is it too late to join? A: Scouts can join at any time without impacting their enjoyment. Pack 8 has had numerous scouts join even as 4th and 5th graders, even midway through the year.

- Q: What are "Dens"? A: Dens are the grade groups that have been given designated names:
--Kindergarten: Lions
--1st Grade: Tigers
--2nd Grade: Wolves
--3rd Grade: Bears
--4th Grade: Webelos
--5th Grade: Arrow of Light

-Q: What types of activities are done in Cub Scouts? A: Adventures include learning about outdoors/nature, personal fitness, community service, STEM, and numerous other electives. Adventures are geared towards age appropriate activities across multiple disciplines. Pack 8 adventures this year have included hiking, kayaking, biking, woodworking, rocket building, coding, kitchen skills, art, yo-yo's, kickball, clothing/food drives, camping, outdoor fire building, conservation, marching in the July 4th parade, and more.

-Q: Do I have to camp? A: Camping is not required and many scouts skip those events. Optional overnight activities include traditional camping as well as sleepovers at museums for those that are interested.

-Q: Is it too late to visit a meeting this year? A: Definitely not! Those who are interested can still visit or join and take part in the final meetings taking place in May and June.
