Plans canceled tomorrow due to rain? Needham Pack 4 kicks off our first meeting tomorrow. Come join 56 Needham families and their 74 scouts at 3-4 PM at the Needham VFW.

Scouting is about character development, nature, leadership development and most importantly, having fun. Many kids start in kindergarten and go all the way through fifth grade but scouts can join at any time.

Last year, we did 5 camping trips to some unique places including a Needham Town Forest with the Needham Boy Scouts, a battleship, a Boy Scout camp, rock climbing gym and Old Sturbridge Village. This is in addition to numerous grade level activities that each den does throughout the year.

Pack 4 joined dozens of other New England scouting groups for a night at the Worcester Red Sox. Over 400 Cub scouts attended a game followed by camping on the field.

Scouting doesn’t stop when school lets out! ☀️ Our Wolf Den spent the weekend at Rosemary Pool completing the Paws for Water adventure—learning water safety, practicing swimming skills, using the buddy system, and building confidence in the water. Summer is a great time to keep learning, earning adventures, and having fun together. 🐺💦

Needham Pack 4 enjoyed our second campout of the spring. This one at old Sturbridge village. Scouts earned their camping badges, got to partake in various activities, and learn about history.

Last week, our scouts endured a meteorite and a strong wind storm at a camp out at Camp Norse Boy Scouts. But they had fun anyway!

Scouts got to participate in archery, BB guns, sling shots, hiking, cooking, fishing, arts and crafts. The camp had a dedicated staff that made the experience unforgettable. Kids also loved the meals and the cookies made in a campfire oven.

Today our Bear den earned their whittling badge. Focusing on knives, knife safety, proper techniques and the importance of using a knife with supervision. Scouts have been looking forward to this badge all year.

🔬🥤 Bear Den Super Science Badge

Our Needham Pack 4 Bear Den had an explosive (and educational!) afternoon earning their Super Science adventure badge.

The scouts ran the classic Mentos + soda geyser experiment, turning it into a real science investigation. Each group of scouts came up with a hypothesis about which soda would create the biggest eruption and then tested it using different soda types — including Coke vs. Pepsi.

In total we launched about:

🥤 744 ounces of soda (about 5.8 gallons)
🍬 Two Costco cases of Mentos — roughly 600+ individual Mentos used for experiments

The scouts worked in teams to:
• Form a hypothesis
• Run the experiment
• Observe the results
• Compare eruptions between soda types

Some eruptions were much bigger than others!

We also practiced Leave No Trace by cleaning up the entire area so it looked just like it did before we arrived.

👏 14 Bear Scouts participated and all earned their Super Science badge.

Science + teamwork + a little bit of soda geyser chaos = a great learning!

This past week, the scouts of Needham Pack 4 had a great time working together on a meaningful service project with Hope And Comfort, a Needham nonprofit dedicated to providing hygiene products to people in need.

Our scouts rotated through several assembly stations, working as a team to pack hygiene kits and help prepare supplies for distribution. The kids had a blast while learning how small acts of service can make a big difference.

Thanks to their hard work, Pack 4 packed 168 hygiene kits and helped assemble a full pallet of more than 7,500 laundry detergent sheets! These supplies will soon go out to youth and families across Massachusetts who are facing hygiene insecurity.

Hope & Comfort’s mission is to ensure sustained access to hygiene products so that children and adults can maintain their health, dignity, and confidence. In Massachusetts alone, an estimated 2.3 million people struggle to afford essential hygiene products because programs like SNAP cannot be used to purchase them.

Service is a core part of Scouting, and we are proud of our scouts for stepping up to help others in our community.

A big thank you to Hope & Comfort for the opportunity and for the incredible work they do every day!

👏 Great job Pack 4!
