JCAM Cemetery Story: Remembering Rabbi Jacob Israel Zuber (1895–1953)
From Eastern Europe to Sweden and eventually Massachusetts, Rabbi Jacob Israel Zuber dedicated his life to Jewish learning, leadership and service.
Born in present-day Belarus, Rabbi Zuber became a respected Torah scholar and spiritual leader. In 1929, he moved to Stockholm, Sweden, where he served the Jewish community for nearly 20 years. During World War II, he played an important role in helping displaced Jews find refuge in Sweden and assisting those in need of visas.
Following the war, Rabbi Zuber and his family settled in Roxbury, Massachusetts, where he served as assistant rabbi at Congregation Beit Hamidrash Hagadol. Beloved for his wisdom and devotion to Jewish education, his life was tragically cut short following a violent attack in 1953.
His daughter, Chana Schafstein, later reflected on his lifelong passion for studying Torah, writing that he treasured his Judaica books because studying Torah was the most important thing in his life.
Today, Rabbi Zuber rests at the Crawford Street Cemetery in West Roxbury, where his legacy lives on.
