Needham Garden Club

Needham Garden Club Needham, MA The Needham Garden Club was founded in 1931 by Mrs. William F. Leach, President of the New Century Club, and was affiliated with that club.

Club meetings are held September through May on the third Tuesday of the month (unless otherwise noted) in the Community Room of the Needham Public Library,
1139 Highland Ave. In 1939 it became an independent organization and was "Federated 1939." The club works with enthusiasm to provide educational programs to the entire Needham community as well as other clubs in the Metrowest District. Most

of our meetings are open to the public, and are well attended. We provide Garden Therapy programs to 4 nursing homes, maintain a garden plot at Noyes Garden, and provide seasonally furnished urns and floral arrangements to the Library. We are members of the Needham Business Association and hold our annual plant sale at their Street Fair in June. In early December, watch for our sale of beautiful seasonal hand made wreaths and arrangements to adorn your home for the holidays. A few other Needham Garden Club Activities: Entries in Needham's Art in Bloom" organized by the Beth Shalom Garden Club using art created by Needham High School Students; Tri-annually, members create table arrangements for Needham High School's George A. Dennett Distinguished Career Award ceremony in recognition of outstanding alumni. In early December members create gorgeous seasonal wreath and table arrangements, which we then sell (our major fundraiser). A very popular event! The Needham Garden Club supports three scholarships. The first two are for club members only. The third is for a high school senior from Needham who intends to study Botany, Horticulture, Conservation, or Environmental Science. The Needham Garden Club is a member of: National Garden Clubs, Inc., New England Region Garden Clubs, The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc., Metro District.

Pollinator Garden at Needham High School

Members of the Needham High School Environmental Club and Needham High School Garden Club recently collaborated on the installation of a pollinator garden at the school.

Supported by donations from Weston Nurseries and the Needham Garden Club, 15 students and 2 teachers came together to plan, prep, and plant native plants that will attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. A pollinator garden is a garden designed intentionally to provide habitat for pollinators using pollen-rich plants.

Pollinator gardens can help to provide refuge for bees, butterflies, and other local pollinators that are currently losing habitat due to pesticides, pollutants, and climate change. Pollinator gardens with native plants are typically better adapted to local climate conditions, requiring less water and chemical inputs than traditional lawns. Pending the success of this first season, the Clubs hope to expand the pollinator garden. Kudos to the NHS Environmental Club and NHS Garden Club for bringing this climate action project to life!

Needham Garden Club's spring workshop, sponsored by the flower-arranging committee, created meditation gardens, using dahlias, no roses, actually carnations. These ubiquitous flowers, with a bit of pinching and pulling, formed dahlia-like flowers. These were used to make Ikebana designs. Beautiful.

Trevor Smith, of ReEarth, entertained the Needham Garden Club with his presentation "Designing with the Seasons." Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. He stated that this also applies to how we design our gardens. He provided colorful slides of his garden designs through the seasons.

Some tips to deter RABBITS:
They don't like minty plants or Monarda..
Use a granular rabbit deterrent when hostas are up 1/2". When leafed out, use spray, or both

Tip: The sound of running water brings pollinators.

Trevor was very informative and spoke to us with kindness and humor.
