As we experience high surf conditions along the coast today and tomorrow, consider this a great time to stay off jetties.

The US National Weather Service Portland Oregon has warned of large waves with hazardous surf conditions and breakers of up to 25 feet along the southern Washington, and northern and central Oregon coasts today through tomorrow.

High waves may wash over beaches, jetties, and other structures.

It's always our very strong expert opinion, as those who built and maintain the jetties along the coast of Oregon (and one in southern Washington), that you avoid jetties pretty much any time. Conditions like these are an ideal time to heed our advice.

Also stay away from logs and other large debris on beaches, as water running up on the beach can easily lift or roll logs or debris, potentially injuring or killing someone in their path.

Dangerous sneaker waves are possible Monday into Tuesday next week along the southern Oregon coast. Sneaker waves are waves that run up on beaches significantly farther than other waves and can surprise beachgoers. They can be knocked down and pulled into the ocean by these waves resulting in injury or drowning. Sneaker waves are very powerful and can move logs and other debris, potentially crushing or trapping unsuspecting people. For those at the beach, never turn your back on the ocean! Keep your distance from the waves and avoid climbing on rocks, jetties or logs when there is an increased threat of sneaker waves. If you see someone swept into the ocean, do not swim in after them! Call 911 and keep an eye on them until help arrives.

11/26/2025

Sneaker waves will be possible Thursday through Saturday. Keep an eye on the waves when venturing near the water, and make sure you have a quick and easy way to get away from unexpectedly large waves running up on the beach. Remember, never turn your back on the ocean!

🌊 Great ShakeOut – 10/16 at 10:16 AM 🌊
This Wednesday, Rockaway Beach will take part in the Nationwide Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill, and we invite our community to join in the exercise!

At 10:16 AM:
Drop, Cover, and Hold On, for one minute, just as you would in an earthquake.
After, grab your Go-Bag and practice heading to your nearest tsunami evacuation area as you would in an actual event.

Taking a few minutes to practice not only helps you prepare, but helps us all stay safe and prepare for real emergencies as we collect data to insure our own city preparedness for earthquakes and tsunamis. We thank you for your support in keeping our community safe and look forward to see you this upcoming Thursday.

💥Be Prepared, not scared!💥
Are you ready for Walkadonna 2025? It's time to Save the Date !
Join us October 16, 2025 at 10:16 AM, as we hold our neighborhood's THIRD annual Earthquake and Tsunami Evacuation Awareness drill.
🛑 But first, let’s talk about emergency preparedness. When disaster strikes there may be little or no time to gather the essential items you will need. That’s where your Go Bag comes into play.
Simply stock a backpack or duffel with the essential supplies you need to survive for 3 days and keep it in a convenient place to grab and go. Then celebrate that you have accomplished the first step toward being prepared.
🤯 But wait! There's more! As a Nedonna Beach Resident, you have the option of keeping a bin of your emergency supplies in one of two sheds that are located outside of the coastal inundation zone. Bypass remembering to grab your Go Bag by placing all your emergency preparedness items where you will need them the most!
If you have questions about how to store your bin in one of the sheds, contact the NBNA at [email protected]
🧐 Wondering what you should put in your Go Bag/Emergency Supplies Bin? Read on!
All Go Bags should include these essential items:
* Items to keep you warm and dry (e.g., waterproof poncho, gloves, hand warmers to place under your arms, mylar sleeping bag)
* Drinking water supply and water filtration system
* 3 day supply of food (e.g. Coast Guard food bars)
* Whistle (a good quality one to call for help if necessary)
* 30-day supply of prescription medications
* Basic first aid supplies
* Light source (e.g. headlamp or flashlight with batteries)
* Hand sanitizer
🤝 Your Go Bag could also include:
+ Comfort items such as a game, book, or teddy bear
+ Cash for emergencies
+ Clothing
+ Pet Supplies
+ AM/PM Radio (with batteries)
+ List of emergency contact phone numbers
+ Copies of important documents
+ Spare glasses/contacts/ hygiene supplies
Note: Replace perishable items like water, food, medications, and batteries as needed or on a yearly basis.
What goes into your bag or bin is up to you. The most important part is that you take these small steps now, and be better prepared for whatever the future brings.
