Public ex*****ons are meant to send a message.

Two thousand years ago, the Romans used them to instill fear in anyone who threatened “law and order.”

One such ex*****on happened outside Jerusalem. Public. Visible. A warning to anyone watching.

We know the story and we know his name. And his ex*****on did inspire fear. But fear did not have the final word.

The movement gathered around him spread throughout the empire—and eventually outlived it.

Those of us who follow that publicly executed Jesus should recognize what we are watching when a government broadcasts a killing.

A human life being taken. State power on display. Death turned into a spectacle.

Those of us who follow the executed Savior must mourn when a human life is taken—and stand against turning death into entertainment.

I, therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace: 4 there is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. (Ephesians 4:1-6)

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14 Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. (1 Corinthians 12:12-14)
