A new partnership and a whole lot of firewood!

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming members of TPUSA Communities Madisonville to Common Garments Ministry, where they delivered a substantial load of firewood just in time for the colder months ahead!

While most people know us for our Food Pantry and Free Store, there's a lot that goes into keeping those ministries running. This wood will help keep our ministry warm through the winter as we continue sharing the warmth of Christ's love with our community.

TPUSA Communities is a growing initiative of Turning Point USA that encourages people to get involved, build relationships, and make a difference right where they live. We're excited to connect with their local Madisonville group and look forward to seeing how we can work together in the future.

A special thank you to and everyone involved with TPUSA Communities and for making this possible.

"If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace, be warmed and filled,' without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?"

James 2:15–16 (ESV)

At Common Garments Ministry, our mission has always been to share the love of Christ by meeting real needs in our community. We're thankful for others who are willing to come alongside us in that work!

Serving Well Means Having Boundaries

At Common Garments Ministry, our heart is to help every person who walks through our doors.

But the reality is that we cannot always help everyone, every time.

Each month, hundreds of families come to Common Garments for food, clothing, household goods, and other assistance. We are incredibly grateful that God has given us the opportunity to serve so many. But we also operate with limited staff, volunteers, resources, and hours.

Because of that, there are unfortunately times when we have to ask someone to make an appointment, come back another day, or seek help from another organization. Sometimes we may simply not have the resources or capacity to meet a particular need at a particular time.

When that happens, it isn’t because we don’t care.

The limits we put in place are what allow us to serve as many people as we can, as well as we can, without overwhelming the people and resources God has entrusted to us. The assistance Common Garments provides is freely offered, and we do everything reasonably within our ability to meet the needs brought to us.

That said, Common Garments has a strict policy regarding abusive or inappropriate behavior. We cannot tolerate threats, harassment, intimidation, verbal abuse, or other inappropriate conduct toward our staff, volunteers, or the people we serve. We reserve the right to refuse service and, when necessary, prohibit individuals from returning to our property.

We understand that people often come to us during difficult and stressful circumstances, and we want to respond with grace and compassion. We simply ask that the same basic dignity and respect be extended to the people who are here serving.

We will continue doing everything we reasonably can to serve our neighbors with compassion, dignity, and the love of Christ. We are deeply grateful for the patience and understanding of the community we are privileged to serve.

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

Keeping Food Flowing In Western Kentucky

We are deeply grateful for our partners at Midwest Food Bank, whose generosity makes these regional distribution days possible. We are equally thankful for the partner agencies who come each month to pick up food for their communities, and for every volunteer and staff member who works behind the scenes to unload, sort, stage, and load it all back out again.

Through these partnerships, God carries provision, care, and dignity far beyond the walls of Common Garments and into communities throughout Western Kentucky. It is our joy and privilege to serve the Lord by serving our neighbors in this way.

“For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.”

- 2 Corinthians 9:12

Thank you for praying, giving, volunteering, and standing with us as we serve our community and region. We are truly grateful for every person and every ministry God has placed alongside us. ❤️

A huge thank you to the young men from Mt. Gilead General Baptist Church who spent part of their Disciple Now weekend serving with us today!

They weeded, hauled off thorn bushes, split wood, cleaned up around the property, and jumped into whatever needed to be done. They kept referring to themselves as the “Blue Collar Team,” and by the end of the day, they had definitely earned the title. 😄

Apparently, weeds, thorns, firewood, and a little hard work are all just small fries for the Blue Collar Team.

More than anything, we were grateful for their willingness to serve and the great attitudes they brought with them. These guys were all-around awesome, and they were a tremendous help to Common Garments today.

Thank you, Mt. Gilead, for investing in these young men and for choosing to spend part of your DNow weekend serving others!

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”

- Colossians 3:23 (ESV)

HELP WANTED: COME SERVE WITH US!

Common Garments Ministry needs regular volunteers who feel called to serve their community. Whether you love working with people, praying with others, organizing, or working with your hands, there is a place for you here.

We especially need help with:

• Welcome & Registration | Low Impact
Greet guests, answer phones, register families, and help people as they arrive.

• Sorting & Free Store | Moderate Impact
Sort, organize, stock, and prepare donated clothing and household items.

• Food Pantry | High Impact
Stock, organize, prepare, and distribute food. This role is more physically active and extra hands make a huge difference.

• Prayer Room | Low Impact / Specialized
Pray with guests, listen, encourage, and share the hope of Christ.

• Facilities & Grounds | Varies
Cleaning, organizing, grounds work, and special projects. Individuals, families, church groups, and one-time volunteers are welcome for these projects!

For our day-to-day ministry, we’re especially looking for people who can serve regularly, whether that’s one day a week or another consistent schedule.

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”

- 1 Peter 4:10 ESV

Feel called or led to serve? Send us a message, give us a call, or stop by. We’d love to find a place for you.

🔥 Firewood Needed 🪵

As cooler weather approaches, we’re getting ready to fire up the wood boiler that heats our ministry facilities.

That means we need firewood.

We can use unsplit wood, but split firewood is especially helpful. Having wood already cut and split saves us hours of labor every week and allows our volunteers to spend more time serving people instead of processing firewood.

Every load of wood helps us keep the building warm for the guests, families, and volunteers who come through our doors.

If you or your church or business have firewood you’d be willing to donate, especially split wood, we would be very grateful.

“Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.”

Thank You, Dunn Missionary Baptist Church!

We are incredibly thankful for our friends at Dunn Missionary Baptist Church and the ways they have partnered with Common Garments Ministry!

Saturday, Dunn sent a group of their youth and adults to spend the day serving alongside us. They stocked shelves, organized food, broke down boxes, cleaned, and helped us get the ministry ready to serve families in our community.

Then, this past Sunday, Dunn blessed us again by inviting us to share with their church family about the work God is doing through Common Garments Ministry and the opportunities we have to serve our neighbors and share the hope of the Gospel.

We are grateful for churches that don't simply encourage missions, but give their people opportunities to participate in the mission.

To everyone at Dunn Missionary Baptist Church: thank you. Thank you for your hospitality, your generosity, your prayers, and especially for sharing your people with us. We are grateful to serve alongside you.

“I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.”

- Philippians 1:3–5 (ESV)
