The Castro County Burn Ban has been lifted until further notice. It is asked that persons burning use extreme caution, especially when wind speeds are above 15 mph. If you are going to burn large trash pits, please call the Sheriff's Office at 806-647-3311 so that we are aware that it is a controlled burn. This helps not to have to page out fire departments if not necessary.

Eventhough we received some rain throughout Castro County, it was not enough to diminish the extreme drought conditions. A little over 80 percent of Castro County is under Extreme Drought conditions. That means the fuel for wildfires is there and there should be no burning. The Burn Ban is still in effect. If a fire is started deliberately, such as a trash barrel or pit, while the Burn Ban is in effect and that fire spreads and damages anyones property, the person who starts the initial fire can face criminal and civil consequences. Anyone seeing smoke is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 806-647-3311. Callers can remain anonymous. Burn Ban violations can lead to a fine up to $500.

Many people today noticed what looked like a tornado near town. What was seen was a landspout — a weak, short-lived
circulation that forms from the ground up under thunderstorms.

While landspouts can kick up dust and debris, they are usually much weaker than traditional tornadoes. As always, stay weather aware and monitor local forecasts. All weather alerts will be posted here on the NVFD page

Eventhough we have received some moisture, the Burn Ban is still in effect. You are not allowed to burn. It is still too dry and if you start a fire, embers may get carried by the wind and start a fire. We have been blessed that we have not had any fires like in other counties. So it is asked, DO NOT BURN.
