Today is National Geographic Day! It is a day to celebrate National Geographic Magazine and the incredible years of storytelling since its founding in 1888. To celebrate we are sharing one of Carlton Ward's photos that was featured in the April 2021 magazine story: 'How America’s most endangered cat could help save Florida.' Read the story now through the link below.

Chobe. Most cats on the African savanna are nocturnal. Cheetahs avoid competing with most other cats by hunting during the day. Due to their diurnal nature, cheetahs have more cones in their eyes (specifically a type of photoreceptor called S cones) compared to most other cat species. This allows cheetahs to discriminate between more colors. Due to the position of their eyes and adaptations in the distribution of cells in their retinas, cheetahs have a panoramic view with 210-degree peripheral vision, allowing them to better scan the horizon. When cheetahs hunt, they can spot their prey in the distance up to approximately three miles away and can keep their focus on their chosen prey as they stalk and chase down the animal.

The last and tiniest small Panthera is spotlighting this week is the rusty-spotted cat. At a weight of only 1-2 kg (2-4 lbs), this diminutive felid is the smallest wild cat on Earth. Living across the Indian subcontinent, the rusty-spotted cat eats small rodents and birds. Its little size does cause problems: these cats may become prey for domestic dogs. Rusty-spotted cats are listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.

Did you know that cats have the incredible ability to rotate their ears 180 degrees?πŸ±πŸ‘‚

This unique feature is thanks to over 30 muscles that allow their ears to move independently and with great precision.
🎯
It's not just for show though, because cats use this skill to locate prey with pinpoint accuracy while hunting. When they hear an interesting sound, they can instantly turn their ears towards it and determine its location making them one of natures most well designed hunters! 😼

But that's not all, their rotating ears also serve as a form of communication. They may flatten their ears against their head if they feel threatened or uncomfortable and hold them upright and twitch them in different directions to express playfulness or curiousity like the fishing cats in images 1 and 2.

truly are fascinating creatures with remarkable physical features! Next time you see a cat, take a moment to appreciate their ears! πŸ˜†

Creative content is one of the easiest and fastest ways to raise profiles of Wildlife species: everyone loves looking at the posters at a nature reserve information centre.
Thus, as IFCP gets around to working on a few more small wild cat species in the country, a poster to highlight these ignored but very charismatic group of felines was much needed. Here is one infographic dedicated to all 8 species of Small Wild cats present and recorded in Pakistan. They are elusive, and they are very much living their shy lives across the country in diverse habitats.
Please do share this as much as you can to increase profiles of these critters. We will be translating it in Urdu as well and regional languages for better reach. This will be also available on our website soon for better quality downloads.
For now, enjoy!
