Happy 189th Birthday to the Ancient Order of Hibernians in America

The Ancient Order of Hibernians is America’s oldest Irish Catholic Fraternal Organization founded concurrently in the coal-mining region of Pennsylvania and New York City in May,1836. The Order can trace its roots back to a series of similar societies that existed in Ireland for more than 300 years. Today the AOH exists in America, Canada, Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland, however, while the organizations share a common thread, the American AOH is a separate and much larger organization.

On Saturday October 11th, the LAOH & AOH held an Anniversary Celebration at Vitale’s in Gloucester City.

The AOH Commodore John Barry Gloucester County NJ Division 1 celebrated its 35th Anniversary and the LAOH Camden County Division celebrated their 25th Anniversary.

The day started with Mass celebrated by AOH Division Chaplain Father Ken Hallahan. Following Mass, was a Luncheon and Celebration at Vitale’s Italian Bistro in Gloucester City.

At last nights General Membership Meeting, Monday October 7, 2025, our Brother Bishop Emeritus Dennis J Sullivan was presented the New Jersey Ancient Order of Hibernians McFaul-Mullan Award.

The McFaul-Mullan Award (Bishop James A McFaul, the second Bishop of Trenton - Father Hugh Mullan, Corpus Christi Chapel, Belfast Ireland) is presented biennially by the New Jersey State AOH honoring a Religious or Lay person that has shown outstanding service of love and forgiveness with understanding and compassion. We acknowledge their continued efforts of living the Gospel truths with justice and faithfulness as they humbly serve the Catholic Church. Their faith and spirit has guided The Ancient Order of Hibernians with the spiritual guidance that assists all men of this order in living our motto of Friendship, Unity, and True Christian charity.

This award was presented on behalf of State President Richard O'Brien, by Division and State Chaplain Father Ken Hallahan aided by Division President Sean Grannan and State Vice President and Division Past President Jerry Logan.
