Tomorrow is Juneteenth, one of the oldest known commemorations marking the abolition of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation—federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and that enslaved people were free.

In observance of the holiday, Cane River Creole National Historical Park will be closed tomorrow. However, we invite you to join us on Saturday, June 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Texas and Pacific Railway Depot for a Juneteenth-inspired craft program celebrating freedom, history, and community.

With significant rainfall in the forecast for much of Louisiana, now is the time to take a few simple steps to protect your historic property.

✅ Clear gutters, downspouts, and drains to help move water away from the building

✅ Check that downspouts discharge away from foundations. Standing water can lead to structural damage and moisture issues.

✅ Inspect roofs, flashing, and vulnerable openings for loose materials or existing leaks.

✅ Move important documents, photographs, and historic materials off floors and away from areas prone to water intrusion.

✅ Document your property's condition with photos before the storm for insurance and recovery purposes.

✅ If flooding is possible, avoid using sandbags directly against historic masonry: trapped moisture can cause long-term damage.

Remember: water is one of the greatest threats to historic buildings. Preventive action today can help preserve our irreplaceable historic places for tomorrow.

Protecting historic places starts before the storm!
