Afternoon STOMPers, hope everyone has had a nice holiday and relaxing break! If you are traveling out to Suffolk today, please avoid the westbound LIE through at least 4 PM this afternoon due to an overturned tractor trailer crash that occurred at 4:30 AM. "The westbound Long Island Expressway will remain closed between Exit 61 and Exit 60 until at least 4 p.m. Wednesday, following an early morning tractor trailer accident that may have caused damaged to a nearby overpass, officials said. The tractor portion of the truck continued on for a short distance before the driver was able to bring it to a stop, police said."

Throwback Thursday, STOMP Holiday Edition! "Like so many inspirational icons before it, the Rockefeller Center Christmas celebration comes from humble roots. On Christmas Eve 1931, it wasn’t as easy as it is today for Americans to forget about life for awhile. Only two years after the stock market crash of ’29, the country was still embroiled in the throes of the Great Depression.

Even with Christmas approaching just the next morning, December 24, 1931 proved to be yet another workday (a Thursday, no less) for the men tasked with completing the construction. But that didn’t stop some of the more ambitious workers under John D. Rockefeller Jr.'s employ, who took it upon themselves to bring a bit of Christmas cheer to their excavated workspace.

Erecting a 20-foot tree in the muddy footprint of what would become one of the city’s grandest and most heralded attractions, workers hung strings of cranberries and paper garlands amongst its branches. Tin cans proved to be adequately fitting ornaments. In the left of the photo, a man stands next to a wooden soapbox; he is about to distribute paychecks to a group of tired and dirty laborers who, despite being on the clock, still appear jovial enough in the presence of an Associated Press photographer.

The result isn’t exactly the gigantic display of festive cheer we see today, but it’s just as–if not more–poignant."

Today, December 17, is the one-year anniversary of the day the designated S. Oyster Bay Road an "access highway," without kindly informing the community--leading to a major influx of freight-based, large trucks on all of our County roads, to include and beyond SOB. It is also the one year anniversary of the day Governor Cuomo banned fracking, which was subsequently followed by Senator Dean Skelos' son, Adam's wiretapped call, where he noted, “Ahhh! This day sucks." Indeed, it did. We have some updates to follow on the Town truck legislation, as well as trees--the Town has approved the local law (which was also accepted by the State), and now, clearly, a matter of enforcement, community engagement, a safety plan, a discussion of moving forward, is needed. We will be posting some updates shortly. In the meantime, please continue to stay safe on our roads, and, document trucks traveling on un-designated roads, creating unsafe conditions, or, idling in areas, as this is very important for our continued work on this piece.

Photo Caption--Oversized truck stuck on Woodbury Road recently, attempting to enter the Bed, Bath, & Beyond shopping center. The Nassau County Police Department was required to remove this disabled truck off of the roadway. Like the oversized truck that hit the LIRR train recently attempting to deliver to a CVS (and road) unable to accommodate a truck of that size, there are trucks of smaller size that can safely deliver goods; profit and the bottom line should not come at the expense of community safety, public health, and importantly, human life.

After the truck scare yesterday, George Marlin, a former NIFA member, published this telling article in the New York Post today. While it's not directly related to trees, it is related to our County. The administration. Its operations. Its financial health. It speaks to county contracts that have been steered and exploited. It speaks to issues like the lack of processes in place, the lack of community concern and engagement, that makes something simple like preserving trees, such a herculean task. After the recent, dual Skelos and Silver convictions, and with ongoing federal level investigations all throughout our County at the moment, this is an important read. Please review, and share. We are really hoping things really start to meaningfully change within this County, soon. We deserve better.

There was a stunning revelation in the corruption trial that convicted Dean Skelos: Gov. Cuomo’s favorite Republican, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, planned to “assert Fifth Amendment privileg...

News12 just updated the story. "The incident occurred at around 5:30 p.m. It appeared that the CVS truck was partially parked on the tracks, trying to back into the nearby CVS when the crossing arm came down. The truck was then sideswiped by an oncoming train." Beyond the size of the truck, and setting aside the tremendous influx of large trucks in our region, we are puzzled how a driver (or the company) would ever think this is a safe means of reaching the parking lot to deliver goods. For this CVS location, a smaller truck is critical for the safety of all parties--the truck driver, the nearby drivers in passenger vehicles, pedestrians, individuals in nearby stores, and of course, train occupants. This accident could have been a lot, lot worse. Fortunately, this time, it was not.

While we are a bit concerned by the unseasonably warm temperatures this month (which, indirectly speaks to why we need more trees around our area to offset pollution and damage to our environment)--this is definitely a neat treat due to the warm weather. This crabapple in Brooklyn decided to flower and fruit, spreading some wonderful holiday cheer.

To celebrate our record-breaking December temperatures, this crabapple in Brooklyn decided to flower AND fruit. Festive!
