The original yearbook states, "With pride and dignity, we have chosen a name for our chapter that means much to every member. We not only live in the shadow of the great monument erected in General Houston's and his men's honor, but most of us live on land
that was the battlefield in which the decisive battle for our independence from Mexico was won." We support the Clear Creek and Dickinson school districts and several private schools with school supplies, Youth Citizenship Awards, scholarships for seniors, JROTC awards, and by sponsoring essay contests and reading with at-risk students. We plan and host the annual Wreaths Across America remembrance ceremony in December at the historic Fairview Cemetery in League City. Our members support current military and veterans by volunteering with Honor Flight Houston, at Michael E. DeBakey VA Hospital, and by recording interviews for the Library of Congress Veterans History Project. We also support the Bernardo de Galvez Society, N.S.C.A.R., where two of our chapter members serve as senior officers. The National organization was founded in 1890 as a nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women's service organization dedicated to the mission of promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America's future through better education. There are over 185,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the world. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible.
