A Step Ahead Foundation of Middle Tennessee

A Step Ahead Foundation of Middle Tennessee hopes to improve educational, economic, and health outcomes for women and their children in Nashville and Middle Tennessee. By providing access to long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) the most effective reversible methods of birth control, we hope to increase positive pregnancy outcomes for both the mother and the child, lower infant mortality, an

d improve family life. We hope to decrease poverty by reducing economic strain and encourage career opportunities before child birth. We provide a means for women to plan each child and every step of her life through education and long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). A Step Ahead Foundation of Middle Tennessee obtained its 501(c)(3) non-profit status on September 1, 2015. We partner with three existing community clinics providing the medical services for long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). A Step Ahead Foundation of Middle Tennessee is being pro-active raising awareness in our community by partnering with community centers, clinics, Department of Health Services, and by educating our schools and social workers.

Let's wrap up this LARC Learning Series with the nonhormonal method. The current nonhormonal IUD on the market is called Paragard and is FDA approved to be over 99% effective for up to 10 years. The Paragard has copper coils wrapped around the T-shaped device. How does it prevent pregnancy without hormones? The copper prevents s***m from reaching and fertilizing an egg. Since there are no hormones, the Paragard does not interrupt the natural menstrual cycle or stop ovulation each month.

Next up on our LARC Learning Series, the hormonal Intrauterine Device (IUD). There are 4 different hormonal IUDs on the market, but they all prevent pregnancy the same way. These 4 devices slowly release a low dose of the hormone progestin into the uterus. They are all over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and can safely shorten or stop a period. Skyla is FDA approved for up to 3 years. Kyleena is FDA approved for up to 5 years. Mirena and Liletta are FDA approved for up to 8 years. Last but not least, tomorrow we will check out the Nonhormonal IUD, Paragard.

Interested in learning a little more about the long-term birth control methods we cover? This week we are going to be highlighting the LARC methods we provide for free to Middle Tennesseans. First up is the arm implant, Nexplanon. Earlier this year, the FDA approved updated labeling for the Nexplanon and has extended its efficacy for up to 5 years. This small, matchstick-sized device is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and once inserted does the heavy lifting to prevent an unplanned pregnancy for you. 💪Stay tuned as we dive into the different IUD options later this week for part two of our LARC Learning Series.
