As the country prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of our nation, the Tennessee Masonic Historical Library & Museum is honored to announce a landmark year-long initiative: "America250: Freemasonry and the American Frontier."
From the philosophical heights of the Enlightenment to the rugged survival of the Tennessee wilderness, Freemasons were the quiet architects of the American experiment. Now, we are opening our archives and research to tell the stories of the men who fought to establish our great nation and then carved a path into the heart of the 16th State.

📜 The 2026 Experience:
• Museum Exhibit: Opening mid-March at our museum within the Grand Lodge of Tennessee. Experience a curated collection of rare artifacts, personal effects, and early charters that trace the lineage from Revolutionary battlefields to the formation of our earliest Tennessee lodges.

• The Digital Narrative: Follow us all year as we share the untold stories of the Brethren, the soldiers, the statesmen, and the frontier settlers, who carried the light of Masonry into the untamed West, forming the early TN lodges and the Grand Lodge itself.

Important work is underway. As with any enduring work, the first steps are taken quietly and with intention.
The cornerstone is being set and the trestleboard carefully laid. In alignment with our mission, the Tennessee Masonic Historical Library & Museum is being built with deliberation, foresight, and respect for the history entrusted to our care. More light will be shared as this important work progresses.

The first national proclamation for a day of public thanks wasn’t from a marketing department or a tourism board. It was penned in 1789 by President George Washington, a Brother Mason whose leadership shaped both a new nation and its civic character.

After the First Federal Congress completed its work on the Bill of Rights, they asked Washington to issue a proclamation inviting Americans to pause, reflect, and give thanks. On October 3, 1789, he delivered exactly that.

Washington called citizens to acknowledge
“the many and signal favors of Almighty God”and to unite in gratitude for the birth of a republic rooted in liberty, justice, and self-governance. The event would be observed on Thursday, the 26th of November next.

It was a moment of national alignment, a strategic reset, and a shared reminder of purpose. For us as Masons, historians, and community builders, this moment hits a little differently. Washington’s proclamation embodies many of the virtues we talk about in lodge and in life: gratitude, reflection, humility, and the relentless commitment to building something better for the people who come after us.

Today, as we gather with family and friends, it’s worth taking that same pause.
To be thankful.
To be present.
To be deliberate about the legacy we’re building.
