For generations, Cheekwood has been more than a beautiful garden and historic estate - it has been a place where our community gathers, learns, celebrates, and finds inspiration.

From school field trips and educational programs to seasonal exhibitions, concerts, and family traditions, Cheekwood has touched the lives of countless Middle Tennesseans. It is a cultural, horticultural, and educational treasure that belongs to our entire community.

Recent developments have raised concerns about the future accessibility and operation of this beloved Nashville landmark. Cheekwood has launched the SAVE CHEEKWOOD campaign to ensure that its gates remain open and its mission continues to serve all who visit.

As an organization deeply committed to horticulture, education, conservation, and community engagement, the Horticultural Society of Middle Tennessee recognizes the important role Cheekwood plays in enriching our region.

We encourage our members, friends, and supporters to learn more about the situation, review the facts, and make their voices heard.

Cheekwood's story is part of Nashville's story. Let's work together to protect this special place for future generations.

Good company, beautiful gardens, and a shared purpose.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Aperitivo in the Garden at Cheekwood last evening. It was wonderful to see so many members, friends, and supporters come together to celebrate summer, connect with one another, and support the future of our community’s tree canopy.

From conversations in the garden to laughter shared over cocktails and Mediterranean-inspired fare, the evening was a reminder of how meaningful it is when people gather around a common passion.

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported HSMT’s Branching Out Initiative. Your participation helps ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy the beauty and benefits of trees throughout Middle Tennessee.

We loved spending the evening with you and look forward to seeing you again soon. 🌳💚

Honoring Hazel Suggs Burley

This week, we had the privilege of honoring Hazel Suggs Burley with the Horticultural Society of Middle Tennessee’s Award of Merit.

Mrs. Burley’s life is a remarkable example of dedication to community, education, and service. A proud graduate of Tennessee State University, she has spent decades actively involved in civic life, church, and community organizations, always grounded in a deep commitment to helping others.

Her connection to gardening and community beautification dates back to the early 1950s through her work with local garden clubs, where her efforts focused on creating spaces of beauty, care, and healing within the community.

At 105 years young, her legacy continues to inspire generations—a reflection of resilience, grace, and a lifetime of meaningful contribution.
To honor her is to recognize a life lived with purpose and impact.
We are deeply grateful to celebrate Hazel Suggs Burley and all she represents to our community 💚

Honoring Patsy Weigel 🥂

This past Saturday, we had the privilege of honoring Patsy Weigel with the Horticultural Society of Middle Tennessee’s Award of Merit.

Patsy’s journey with HSMT is one marked by quiet dedication, generosity, and a genuine love for horticulture. Over the years, she has given her time, her energy, and her heart to this community, helping nurture not just gardens, but the people and connections that make this organization so special.

There are individuals who leave a lasting imprint not through recognition, but through consistent care and presence - and Patsy is one of them.

It was a beautiful moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate all she has given.

We are deeply grateful for Patsy and the legacy she continues to be part of.

We’re so proud to share this moment 🥂 👏

Our very own Deby Krueger Pitts President of the Horticultural Society of Middle Tennessee, is featured on Nashville PBS’s Volunteer Gardener - a wonderful recognition of her passion, vision, and dedication to horticulture.

To see one of our own showcased on PBS, sharing her garden and knowledge with a wider audience, is something truly special for our entire HSMT community.

Take a few minutes to watch, be inspired, and celebrate this well-deserved spotlight.

We are treated to a tour of a formal courtyard garden that acts as an extension of this Italian-style villa. Here, a row of trees and shrubs form a wall of ...
