Our next Lunch and Learn event on October 15 will be with Dr. Antoinette G. van Zelm, Assistant Director at MTSU Center for Historic Preservation. For "Heroines Aplenty: Portrayals of Revolutionary-Era Women in Tennessee over the Years," she will be exploring the ways that historians and other writers have depicted Revolutionary-era women who lived within the present-day borders of Tennessee between 1770 and 1810.

As early as the mid-nineteenth century, Revolutionary-era Tennessee women were being lauded as “patriotic mothers” and “unsung heroines,” two interpretations that continued well into the twentieth century. With the new social history of the 1960s and ‘70s, greater attention to Native and African American women expanded the image of early Tennessee women. Ultimately, the woman who has received the most sophisticated analysis is Nan-ye-hi, or Nancy Ward, known as the “Beloved Woman” or the “War Woman of Chota.” The talk will conclude with suggestions for future research on Revolutionary-era women in Tennessee.

At the National level DAR offers scholarships for:
Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduate and graduate students in specific areas of study as outlined below. National scholarship applications are accepted each year: November 1 through January 31 (must be received by 11:59 p.m. Hawaii Time). Applicants must be citizens of the United States and must attend or plan to attend an accredited college or university in the United States.

Merit Scholarship
Richard and Elizabeth Dean Scholarship: $5,000 to two high school seniors with a minimum 4.0 GPA; renewable up to four years; American studies focus.
Political Science, History, Government & Economics Scholarships
Dr. Aura-Lee A. and James Hobbs Pittenger American History Scholarship: $2,000 to a graduating high school senior studying American history or government; renewable up to four years.
Enid Hall Griswold Memorial Scholarship: One-time $5,000 award to two college juniors or seniors majoring in political science, history, American government, or economics; Recipients may reapply.
DAR Centennial Scholarship: One-time $2,500 award to two students pursuing postgraduate historic preservation studies; Recipients may reapply.
Lucinda Beneventi Findley History Scholarship: One-time $2,000 award to two graduating high school seniors with demonstrated interest in history or plans to major in history.
Medical and Nursing Scholarships
Medical scholarships exclude pre-med and physician assistant programs.
Alice W. Rooke Scholarship: One-time $5,000 award to one medical or osteopathic student; Recipients may reapply. Preference given to female applicants.
Irene and Daisy MacGregor Memorial Scholarship: One-time $5,000 award to two medical or osteopathic students; renewable up to four years. Preference given to female applicants.
Dr. Francis Anthony Beneventi Medical Scholarship: One-time $5,000 award to one medical or osteopathic student; Recipients may reapply.
Leslie Andree Hanna Medical Scholarship: One-time $5,000 preferred award to two female medical or osteopathic students; Recipients may reapply.
Madeline Pickett (Halbert) Cogswell Nursing Scholarship: One-time $2,500 award to two nursing students who are DAR members or descendants; Recipients may reapply.
DAR Caroline E. Holt Nursing Scholarship: One-time $2,500 award to four nursing students with financial need; Recipients may reapply.
Mildred Nutting Nursing Scholarship: One-time $2,000 award to two nursing students with financial need; Recipients may reapply.
DAR Lena Ferguson Nursing Scholarship: One-time $5,000 award to two nursing students with financial need attending the University of the District of Columbia.
DAR Occupational/Physical Therapy Scholarship: One-time $5,000 award to four occupational, physical, art, or music therapy students with financial need; Recipients may reapply.

Lillian and Arthur Dunn Scholarship: $2,500 award to a daughter or son of a DAR member; renewable up to four years.
Arthur Lockwood Beneventi Law Scholarship: A one‐time $2,000 award for a student enrolled in law school. Recipients may reapply.
Edward G. and Helen A. Borgens Elementary and Secondary Teacher Education: A one‐time award up to $1,500 to two students 25 years of age or older studying to teach (one in elementary and one in secondary education). Recipients may reapply.
Mary Elizabeth Lockwood Beneventi MBA Scholarship: A one‐time award up to $2,000 to a full‐time graduate student majoring in business administration. Recipients may reapply.
Margaret Howard Hamilton Scholarship: $1,000 award to a graduating high school senior with disabilities accepted into the Harvey and Bernice Jones Learning Center at the University of the Ozarks; renewable up to four years.
Michael T. and Mary L. Cloyd Scholarship: A one‐time $3,000 award to two students, either a junior undergraduate or graduate level studying library science. Recipients may reapply.
Nellie Love Butcher Music Scholarship: One-time award of up to $5,000 to a music student pursuing voice or piano; a performance piece must be submitted with the application.
DAR Marian Anderson Legacy Scholarship: A one‐time $5,000 award to a student pursuing undergraduate or graduate study in music. Recipients may reapply.
Robert Hunter Swadley Horticulture Scholarship: (California residents only): A scholarship for a graduating high school senior majoring in horticulture anywhere in the USA. Award amount is determined each year and may cover partial or up to full tuition, room and board, and expenses.
William Robert Findley Graduate Chemistry Scholarship: One-time $2,000 award to a graduate student majoring in chemistry; Recipients may reapply.
Leo W. and Alberta V. Thomas Utz Scholarship (English, Math, Science): $4,000 award to three high school students—one each in English, math, and science; renewable up to four years.
American Indians Scholarships
All American Indian scholarships require applicants to provide a copy of their tribal card from a tribe recognized at the state and/or federal level.
• DAR American Indians Scholarship: A one-time $4,000 award to an American Indian college or technical vocational student. Recipients may reapply.
• Frances Crawford Marvin American Indian Scholarship: A one-time award for an American Indian student enrolled full-time at a two- or four-year college or university. Recipients may reapply. Amount is based on endowment rate of return.
• Anne Trevarthen Memorial Scholarship: A one-time award to a graduating high school senior who will be attending the College of William & Mary in Virginia. Amount is based on endowment rate of return.
