Revisiting a previous collaborative project between Converge and the Packing Plant. This was a study and proposal for a section of greenway along Brown's Creek in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood and was presented at a ULI event on February 12, 2020.

Key Notes:
Direct connections to planned Multi-model improvements
Using Metro R.O.W. and Easements eliminates acquisition costs
Minimal intrusion into Floodplain
Celebration of Cultural & Historic Sites
Exposure to Trevecca Urban Farm (T.U.F.)
Multi-modal Food Access
Adjacencies of existing Affordable Housing units (A.H.)

The time to repair our Stroads is Now…

Like planting a tree, the best time to repair a Stroad was 30 years ago. The second best time is Now.

These photos are from two Stroads in Nashville - Craighead Street and Eighth Avenue South (U.S. Hwy. 31). These are by no means the worst Stroads in Nashville, they just happen to be the two I was walking on this morning. Note the vast expanses of pavement and near complete lack of sidewalks and accommodations for pedestrians, bicyclists, etc., as well as the extremely low volume of traffic during the middle of morning “rush hour”.

It is worth noting some of the newly built apartment complexes and historic commercial zones with adjacent sidewalk and streetscape amenities and how much better those stretches are than the un-improved stretches; however, too much of these areas are non-places that do not reflect positive aspirations of a city and cannot induce much pride and passion of place nor much community engagement.

Why do we continue to build and live with these non-places? The public real estate of these Stroads can clearly be re-designed and re-apportioned to better reflect the values of what should be a community-oriented, urban living environment. We can, and must, do better with our public spaces, and a first step is to recognize that our streets are public places for people (including, but not exclusively for people in cars) and these Stroads can be repaired to function as such.

Let us do better and let us start Now!

“The Connect Downtown project is a joint project of the Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT), the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), WeGo Public Transit, and the Nashville Downtown Partnership to improve mobility and address traffic congestion in the downtown core. One way that you can help take part is by taking the Connect Downtown survey and sharing it with your network. For more information, visit the project website.”
