Three federal challenges to Tennessee redistricting now assigned to same judge Chief U.S. District Judge William Campbell, Jr., a Trump appointee, has been assigned the three cases, which could ultimately go before a three-judge panel consisting of Campbell, another federal judge and an appeals court judge. The two other judges have yet to be named. A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the cases had been consolidated.
A hearing to consider a temporary injunction in a fourth case, brought in Davidson County Chancery Court by the Tennessee chapter of the NAACP and its president, Gloria Sweet-Love, is set for May 21.
Redistricting Makes the House Map Redder, but Not By Enough to Protect Republicans
Analysts suggest that Democrats probably would need to win the House popular vote by 4 points to feel good about flipping the House. Democrats lead in House generic ballot polling now is more like 6 points, and Republicans face a number of big-picture headaches as Trump’s approval rating has dipped a bit under 40% and economic pessimism reigns.
While the political environment tends to favor the party out of power this year, redistricting allows the GOP a easier path to a majority in the long run while also diminishing black voices in Congress.
