📖 THE BLACK PAPER IS HERE.
For years we've talked about achievement gaps.
This report asks a different question:
Which schools are actually growing Black student proficiency in Nashville?
The findings are both hopeful and urgent.
✅ Multiple elementary schools increased Black student proficiency by 20-38 percentage points.
⚠️ Only five middle schools achieved 20+ percentage point growth in Black student math proficiency.
Parents deserve to know what's working.
Schools that are producing results deserve to be celebrated.
And every child deserves access to a school that can help them reach grade-level mastery.

Today Nashville PROPEL is proud to release The Black Paper: Which Schools Are Growing Black Student Proficiency in Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools?

In 2024, our White Paper exposed a hidden literacy crisis and revealed that many parents believed their children were performing on grade level when data suggested otherwise.
This year, we focused on a different question:
Which schools are helping more Black students reach grade-level mastery?
The results show that meaningful growth is possible.

Several elementary schools achieved gains of 20-38 percentage points in Black student proficiency over the last five years.
At the same time, the report reveals an alarming challenge:
Only five middle schools achieved 20+ percentage point growth in Black student math proficiency.

This report is not about blame.
It is about celebrating success, learning from what works, and demanding more for every child in Nashville.
